  • Suze05 Mar 30, 2011 @ 12:40 am | delete
Good to know.. I'll definitely have to try to keep my lenses on the shorter and break them up into smaller chunks. : O)
  • javrsmith Dec 30, 2010 @ 2:13 pm | delete
I can see that the custom template would be helpful. This lens has been blessed by a Squid Angel.
  • budwalker Dec 16, 2010 @ 12:20 am | delete
Hohohoo ! I want my lens to be known. I wished I could do more about it.
  • BizGuides Dec 9, 2010 @ 5:54 pm | delete
Thank goodness you addressed the issue of a "Long Lens"
Yes, there is a saturation point.
Some lenses are like reading "Gone With the Wind"!
I truly enjoy lenses that are like having a nice meal.
A drink, appetizer, little side salad, main course, small dessert (maybe), then the check.
You walk out the door being truly satisfied
and wanting to come back again to savor another entree.
A great lens is like that.
  • newbizmau Dec 8, 2010 @ 3:24 pm | delete
I never stop learning from your lenses. Thanks for all your long hours working on these great lenses. You are truly a teacher.
  • 5thingsabout Nov 10, 2010 @ 9:15 am | delete
I have found a lot of great tips here too, but when you say to focus on a shorter lens, in my mind, any lens that I have to hit the scroll button more than 10 times is way too long of a lens. I tend to lose interest after the first 3 modules or scroll clicks. I feel that even though there are a ton of great mods to use, and many will earn income, the average user will not scroll through them to get to the meat of the lens. Often I find many are putting the content up first, then a bombardment of earning mods after it. A lens master won't view them; they'd put them up on their own lens to earn if they are going to get the product. The average users won't ever see them because they've lost interest in the lens after the 3rd scroll.

I'm not knocking your lens by any means; it's a great lens, but have you had experience with lost interest in a lens? I would like to know what others feel is a good amount of content for a lens before making another. My concern is no way a jab at Julie, please don't think that, but I've been reading a ton of lenses lately, and many don't hold my interest past the content.

Awesome tips! I want to take the next step on Squidoo!
  • makingamark Sep 29, 2010 @ 5:49 pm | delete
You got your thumbs up as soon as you said FREE. It's great to see somebody sharing what they know without making it into yet another ebook!

Great tips - some of which I have already followed - and some of which are good reminders. I've often thought about breaking up some of the longer ones but I'm holding out for the copy module functionality! :)
  • capriliz Sep 11, 2010 @ 11:18 pm | delete
Thanks for all the great tips. I do think it can be a challenge to keep lenses tight and focused.
  • Greekgeek Sep 3, 2010 @ 3:02 am | delete
    Hello my dear!
Someday I need to sit down with your checklist and take pruning shears to about half my lenses. I think it takes 5 times as much work to make a lens 5 times shorter!
Thank you for coming up with tips that work for old squids AND new!
  • drs2biz Jul 21, 2010 @ 12:44 pm | delete
Very happy to be "thumbs up" #101 ( I still feel I'm just learning about how to use Squidoo) and grateful to receive this information. Thanks, JJ. Your advice is, as always, well taken. Today I have discovered the credentials of the lensmaster with "the mostest", and understand why your advice makes so much sense.

I was thinking one of my lenses was a bit long, but I wasn't quite sure what to do about it -- or how to pick what to cut out. (especially since there's yet more I want to add to it ;)
Thanks for pointing this out -- it really makes sense now. =)
  • Snozzle May 29, 2009 @ 2:17 pm | delete
I can see how regularly updated lenses can be split - it makes sense now you've mentioned it. very useful advice - thanks.

I am wondering have you ever had a lens that ranked 0, I mean I know I am new and a bad writer but I would at least expect to be ranked 1 millionth.
  • Mickie_G Feb 13, 2009 @ 1:54 pm | delete
Yep, I need to look at older lenses! Then break them up!

  • CashGiftingCabbie Nov 19, 2008 @ 6:11 pm | delete
OK, OK, OK, another brilliant lens that has humbled me. Of course I will give this lens 5 stars and a favorite nod, but good grief if I keep finding jewels like this I'll have to cut back on golf, poker night with the gang, and those Louis L'Armour Westerns that I gobble up each week.

You see, I get so excited exploring, reading and trying out great stuff like this that I worry I'll have less time for those other things. However, I will return to this lens over and over for truth be told it's just as satisfying as sinking a birdie putt or filling an inside straight.
