Internship South Africa

What can I expect when on my internship in South Africa?

Some of the questions most commonly asked by young people when starting internships in South Africa: are there lions? Am I going to be working in an AIDS area? Do you have public transport?

Simple answers to these questions: It depends, even to the question regarding the lions! Depending on where you will be working, there very well may be lions roaming about, but to be honest, this will only happen if you choose to work in one of South Africa's many national parks, and not all of them have lions in natural surroundings - many are given a very large area to roam about, but is essentially a cage. No, we do not have wild animals running around the city; this is not your average Wildlife on One show (unless you class some of the taxi drivers and commuters on the roads%u2026)! However, we do have stunning scenery and it is definitely worth taking the time out of your busy internship to see some of the sights.

Get real

Will you be working in an AIDS area? Again, this depends on where you go. Unfortunately, AIDS and HIV generally affect the poorer areas of South Africa and Cape Town. Not all of South Africa is overrun by the disease, but you will definitely come across it, especially if you are working in the medical industry. Don't believe everything you read or hear on the international news, this country still has plenty of healthy people and people that do not die from this devastating virus. This is something you will have to expect when on your internship. Cape Town has a high population of poor people, but not all of them have AIDS or HIV.

Cape Town has an excellent public transport network, with trains and buses galore. However, a word of warning when wanting to catch the minibus taxis, if you want to have a thrill seeking ride, catch them by all means. Just remember that they stop anywhere, drive like maniacs and are usually not roadworthy. However, they are very cheap and go all over the city and surrounding suburbs.

Research

When on your internship in South Africa, it is advisable to do your research first, and not base all your ideas and knowledge on what you read in the news. South Africa is a diverse country, and we would love to have you here on your internship. Cape Town is a stunning place but remember it is not the "true" Africa you see on the news.
