Katadyn Expedition Water Filters - Overview & Review

Katadyn Expedition Filter is virtually indestructible which explains why it is the H20 filter of choice for large expeditions, government and humanitarian organizations.

Originally designed to remove all kinds of bacteria, the Katadyn Water Filter was buit to treat natural water such as streams, pongs, springs and reservoirs and was designed to meet strict Swiss standards.

In tests the Katadyn was shown to remove Giardia, coliform and some of the smallest know bacteria in existence. When tested, water that remained in the Katadyn after idle periods showed no bacteria, indicating that bacteria do not incubate within the filter.

The Katadyn Expedition Filter is also used to remove harmful bacteria from dechlorinated water. Bacteria may incubate and multiply on the wet charcoal filters used to remove chlorine or chemicals.

Harmful bacteria are prevented from contaminating the ceramic filter by bacteriostatic silver. During the manufacturing process, Katadyn disperses this throughout the ceramic material and the protection is ongoing until the life cycle of the element is complete.

All sorts of parasites, algae, pollen, fungi, microscopic dust particles as well as larger suspended particles and sediment are removed by Katadyn filtration. This makes water from the Katadyn expedition filter taste even better.

To ensure the output spout stay bacteria free and uncontaminated, the filtered water in the Katadyn Expedition Water Filter flows from the outer surface of the ceramic through a chamber and then to the spout. This means the water spout is ongoingly flushed clean by decontaminated water.
Occasionally, the exterior surface of the ceramic filter element can be temporarily blocked up by the matter in the water. Brushed the outside of the filter will restore the normal flow rate.

The filter does not removed chemicals or dissolved minerals from water. Sea water will therefore not be desalinated. Nor is hard water softened by the removed of minerals such as calcium or magnesium.

The Katadyn Expedition FilterKatadyn Expedition Water Filter does not include charcoal needed for the removal of chemical pollutants. This is an additional water treatment process than micorfiltration for removing micro-organisms.

The Katadyn expedition filter is perfect for large groups because of its one gallon per minute output. Its nickel plated casing is built to last in all environments and its neat and compact design makes the Expedition Filter a durable and versatile unit for many expedition and camping needs.
The thick filter wall can be cleaned up to 300 times yielding up to 26,000 gallons before having to be replaced.

The Katadyn water filter comes with a prefilter and carry bag.

What People Using the Katadyn Expedition Water Filter Have to Say

Expedition Water Filters User Reviews

This water filter is easy to operate and easy to maintain. It's "bicycle-pump" operation is made comfortable with an adjustable height. The filter is quickly removed with a twist of a couple wing nuts.

I suppose it could put out 1 gal/min if the water is perfectly clear. Just don't expect this kind of output if there are any suspended particles in the water. Alum can help settle muddy water, but even with this and allowing things to settle overnight it still took me around an hour to filter 15 gallons. This time also included cleaning the filter multiple times with a green scrubby, which should be included in your filter kit.

The Big Bertha bombproof, burly, best bucket-pumper that can handle ANY type of water. I bought one of these after seeing them used on Grand Canyon river rafting trips and hearing that several agancies used them to provide water for victims of Hurricane Katrina. If you need a water purifier for long trips, large groups, or relief efforts, this is it. This will be on my raft or in my SUV for all extended sojourns. Easy to use and field serviceable.

I'm A rafter, not a car camper.
The Katadyne filter is slow, and somewhat of a pain ergonomically to use. It also works well for the absolute filtration of water from virtually any source. Perhaps more exotic technologies exist in today's enlighted era, but where I have been on trips where these failed, I will always carry my expedition since it has the lowest failure potential and does not fail in a mode that leaks impurities (like some). The ability to clean the re-usable ceramic filter makes this the unit of choice. I have not had to replace the ceramic filter nor have any of the incredably durable stainless steel parts fialed.

Very heavy. Very slow. Works like a raft pump - Ergonomically insane (takes both feet and both hands. Must be on flat, hard ground so spigot hits the bucket). I love Katadyn's smaller filters but the Expedition sucks. For the price and weight reverse osmosis is an option. Large parties consider boiling, chemicals. Gravity feed filters work but are very, very slow.
