Experimental Cooking Is Kitchen Arts and Crafts - Educational, Fun and Delicious

Fried Chocolate? It didn't really have any appeal to me, but it certainly sounded good to our daughter.

Part of our family's home education style is learning by experimentation. So for an arts and crafts project Melissa decided to "craft" a snack. First she outlined her plan, then she made her creation, and being the generous girl she is, she shared the results.

Here we will take you on a step by step journey through this chocolate experiment. Hope you enjoy it.

Before Melissa Began Her Experiment I Asked a Few Questions . . .

What are you attempting to do?
"I am going to make a dough and wrap a chocolate bar in it, then fry it."

Where did you get the idea?
"I was at the slopes going up on the chair lift. The people on my chair were talking about American food being loaded with fat. One of the guys said something about deep frying a chocolate bar. I thought it would taste better if I added a pastry shell. Otherwise the chocolate would melt into the fat when frying. I am not deep frying it because we don't have a deep fryer. I am going to try pan frying it."

What is your goal - Why are you doing this?
"It will hopefully be delicious!"

Ingredients

Melissa based her dough on a pastry she has used before. She made a few changes as she went along, taking copious notes. Here is the final ingredient list:

5/8 cup flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
1.5 oz butter
1/2 Tbs sugar
4 Tbs water (approximately)
1/4 tsp milk
2 mini chocolate Mars Bars

Melissa decided to add milk and baking powder after we took the photo

What To Do

Step by Step, Melissa took notes as she went along.

1. Mix together the flour and butter until it resembles fine breadcrumbs
2. Mix in sugar and baking powder
3. Add water and milk and mix until doughy
4. Roll out the dough
5. Butter the chocolate bar
6. Roll the chocolate bar up in enough of the pastry to cover completely
7. Pan fry in butter for a few minutes on each side
8. Bake at 180c (350F) for 5 minutes or until chocolate starts to bubble (gaps will form as it bakes)
