Expert Blogging Advice - To Help Bloggers Succeed

Ranked #1,309 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #52,693 overall

How to blog like an expert

Blogging has evolved to new standards of professionalism. To succeed as bloggers we must be willing to meet the challenge of competing with the best.

I've been blogging since 2001 and have studied the experts extensively. I no longer believe blogging is an easy road to riches, though it can bring in a good part time income for most of us. Some will excel, but it is hard to find a niche that hasn't already been dominated by some other expert for years already.

If you've found an exclusive niche that isn't glutted by other bloggers, you're a lucky one, and I suggest you go ahead and try blogging, so long as you can commit to frequent updates on your blog. There are many blogs that are updated only once weekly. Others say to blog several times a week, or even several times daily. Whatever schedule you set for yourself is fine though if you want to attract readership, blogging less than once weekly isn't likely to do it.

Every article you place on your blog should be considered a potential search engine magnet. It needs to be configured correctly, including an appeal to the ideal keywords that search engine visitors might use to find you. That's why I say, "Keep spinning your SEO web." SEO is search engine optimization. Learning SEO is a big part of blogging like an expert.

Preliminary Thoughts on Choosing Domain Names

...how to name your blog.

If you want a highly successful blog you'll need a domain name people can easily remember, or one that brings in tons of search engine traffic. Let's look at the domain names of some very successful bloggers.

1. Catchy names: www.problogger.com and www.copyblogger.com are not only easy to remember, they contain the magic word, 'blogger'.

2. Your name: www.stevepavlina.com and chris.pirillo.com - they're using their own names. These also can be memorable.

3. Variations on your name: www.chrisg.com - I never have any trouble remembering the URL of Chris Garrett's blog.

4. Keywords: Sometimes in naming my blogs I've chosen to use keywords: www.countrykitchenpantry.com was chosen for the keywords 'kitchen pantry' and 'country kitchen'. It ranks well for both.

5. Short: Shorter names are easier to remember. Compare my http://www.eftjoy.com with www.countrykitchenpantry.com. What would you remember?

Stats! How to Get Traffic

We bloggers become statistics watchers. We need to know how many people are visiting our blogs, where they're coming from, and what search terms are used to find us.

Link to Other Blogs and Sites

...do not be afraid of giving too much to others.

A lot of people have the misguided idea that linking to other sites will detract from search engine ranking. I've noticed that with my sites where I link to other sites, my blogs become more popular and better rated in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

Link in your sidebar, link in your posts. Link, link, link. People will find you because you've linked to them and will love you for it. The more friends you have, the more your blog will prosper.

Search Engine Optimization

Yes, you're going to need to learn something about search engine optimization, but it isn't as hard as it sounds. I like to think of SEO as being fun and I hope you will too.

SEO News From Around The Blogosphere

...blog posts about search engine optimization.

If you want to be a successful blogger, you'll need to study and understand search engine optimization (SEO) which is the way to get your blog noticed by people who use search engines.

It is a fact that most of your site visitors will be sent to you from Google, so you'll need to know how to optimize your blog for Google.

Though I don't do every blog post with Google in mind, SEO does influence me at times. It is important not to overdo it. Your first duty should be toward making your blogging voice authentic. Make it sound like the real YOU. After that, if you can choose the right words, it wouldn't hurt. But don't ever sound stilted like someone just fishing for search engine traffic.

Yes, it is like walking a tightrope at times. ::sigh:: . . . just remember, you're talking to PEOPLE and connecting with them heart to heart. Nothing else matters as much.

In the meantime, do study SEO. It is important.

That was a great collection and everything in it seemed pretty useful. I liked the part - Be yourself and not somebody else. This is what I fear. I am thinking of starting a blog and I have gone through so many people's blogs that I am afraid that mine will have traits of others. This is preventing my efforts to start my own blog.

Excellent compilation of videos from blogging experts! Also thanks for the good intro.

In my opinion, blogging is really just sharing your thoughts in interesting ways and building a following and a community of like-minded people. The key to success in it is being opinionated, being open and sparking discussions, so that people with same interests as you WANT to hear more from you when it comes to the industry/field/niche you're in.

Lots of great information and tips here. I have two blogs and, though both have some ads and Amazon affiliate links on them (and I occasionally blog about something I've read), I never have been too concerned about making an income from them. I've been much more interested in, as you say, being myself and connecting with people. I think, if you focus on those sorts of things, the money will come. It may not be a LOT, but it will. At least, that's been my experience. For me, the biggest income earner as a result of my blogs is the fact that people go from the blogs to my novel and buy a copy. And that's with very passive promotion.

Hi Linda, you have some good information about blogging and I enjoyed taking your poll.

I've been blogging a long time and have way too many test blogs that need to be mothballed. However, I learned the hard way never to give up a URL that has regular traffic. At one point I had a blog at johndilbeck.blogspot.com. When I closed it, someone else grabbed it and started advertising things I never would have. So, this time, when I close the blogs I no longer plan to maintain, I'll add a final post explaining what I'm doing and linking to one or more of my sites, blogs, or lenses that would be relevant.

My goal is to get down to five blogs that I can update regularly.

    Act on your dream! JD
