Hey Linda, this is amazing. Can I ask how much time this took you to make? Also, I personally found that the number one thing that a blogger should concentrate on is building trust, but that is just what worked for me. Anyway, awesome post, just squidliked it :)

I made this lens several years ago and don't remember how long it took to make. i suspect at least a day. It has also been through one major redesign and has a purple star. Despite all that, this lens has only earned $11.76 in "lifetime royalties" so far. Kind of a waste of time in terms of money, yet I've received some nice comments and hope some have found new ideas about how to blog successfully.

That was a great collection and everything in it seemed pretty useful. I liked the part - Be yourself and not somebody else. This is what I fear. I am thinking of starting a blog and I have gone through so many people's blogs that I am afraid that mine will have traits of others. This is preventing my efforts to start my own blog.

Great info. I still consider myself a newbie and have to agree that finding an unsaturated niche is the hardest part. Also if you don't like writing content can become a real drag. thank you for great info

Those are great blogging tips! I just kind of assessed my self with you tips, if I passed you tips as a blogger. Really, Community Information and Expert Advice are essentials. If this were missing like your advice, I wouldn't be able to grade myself with the thing I blog. That really interest me a lot! Thank you very much, so much information with your post! Tanks for sharing..

Thanks. Great lens. I liked the list of SEO sources. I am a big fan of SEOmoz, but you helped me to discover some new but really useful websites.

Excellent compilation of videos from blogging experts! Also thanks for the good intro.

In my opinion, blogging is really just sharing your thoughts in interesting ways and building a following and a community of like-minded people. The key to success in it is being opinionated, being open and sparking discussions, so that people with same interests as you WANT to hear more from you when it comes to the industry/field/niche you're in.

I started a blog a few years ago, but didn't choose my domain well. My most recent blog is a different story entirely -- I used google adwords, chose my domain, and have I'm already being discovered. But there's still so much to learn!

Good lens - comprehesive, covers quite a few aspects of blogging, provides useful links and useful, practicable advice for creating better blogging content (xa xa, this is a little practice on the use of KeyWords, I'm so new to SEO!). Structured lens, also; I appreciate structure in informative pages. I'm favouriting it!

To me this is wonderful, it only proves that you need to be passionate about blogging, I don't make much off my blogs, but I love them too much to give them up...

Lots of great information and tips here. I have two blogs and, though both have some ads and Amazon affiliate links on them (and I occasionally blog about something I've read), I never have been too concerned about making an income from them. I've been much more interested in, as you say, being myself and connecting with people. I think, if you focus on those sorts of things, the money will come. It may not be a LOT, but it will. At least, that's been my experience. For me, the biggest income earner as a result of my blogs is the fact that people go from the blogs to my novel and buy a copy. And that's with very passive promotion.

Great lens. I am getting good at squidoo (and Helium, and habpages, etc.) but my blogs? Well, the one I think should do well is here:

    http://thriftyhome.blogspot.com

But, I know nothing about promoting blogs.
  • johndilbeck Aug 8, 2008 @ 1:55 am | delete
Hi Linda, you have some good information about blogging and I enjoyed taking your poll.

I've been blogging a long time and have way too many test blogs that need to be mothballed. However, I learned the hard way never to give up a URL that has regular traffic. At one point I had a blog at johndilbeck.blogspot.com. When I closed it, someone else grabbed it and started advertising things I never would have. So, this time, when I close the blogs I no longer plan to maintain, I'll add a final post explaining what I'm doing and linking to one or more of my sites, blogs, or lenses that would be relevant.

My goal is to get down to five blogs that I can update regularly.

    Act on your dream! JD
