Awe-inspiring, beautiful and sometimes heartbreaking, Ethiopia and Eritrea are not like anywhere you've been before. A realm of rock-hewn churches, buzzing bazaars and untouched wilderness, the Horn of Africa is truly unique. See the mist rising off the mountains, hear the gurgle of children's laughter in the narrow streets of Harar, or catch a glimpse of a wolf prowling under the thorn trees.

New Text / Write module - using this module to learn how to use Firefox extension Xinha

Our households have changed considerably over the years.

Today, we cook meals in minutes with programmable ovens, wash clothes in energy-efficient, high-performance machines, and press our clothes with cordless, electronic steam irons. If we need soap or other household necessities, we merely go to the store and find countless products at our fingertips.

We don't have to go very far back in history to find a very different life style - where families worked long, hard hours to maintain the family with bare essentials. To get a glimpse of what households used to be like, let's travel back just to my day when I was a child when we lived in the country in the interior of BC. -- 1940's and 1950's. We had a metal dipper that was always in the water bucket sitting next to the sink on the high kitchen cabinet. Everyone drank from it and put it back for the next person. This was the custom in all of the country homes when I was a child. In town, when we visited our Grandparents, we all shared the same water glass. We didn't have a fridge - but our milk and homemade butter was always kept cold in the summertime. We had a treat of homemade ice cream 2 or 3 times a summer and often my Mom and Dad would make a batch of root beer for those really hot days when we would all be out in the field helping with haying.. So how did we keep things cold? Ice harvesting. My Dad would ice harvest every winter from a little pond out in one of our fields. I remember going with him sometimes watching from the bank and playing in the deep snow while Dad cut the ice with a hand held ice saw and then put large ice picks on the block and have the horse pull the block out onto a low sleigh. But first the snow had to be shoveled off the ice and then it would be lunch time where Dad would build a fire and we would heat water in a tin syrup bucket to make hot chocolate and coffee and we each had our own tin cup .. that is why I loved to go with my Dad - very special memories now - a picnic in the snow%u2026. Quiet and beautiful.
