Ranked #36,521 in Travel & Places, #888,973 overall
Barcelona is a unique city that combines two qualities that many vacationers look for: beautiful beaches and the European city feel. As the second largest city in Spain, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan city that focuses on modernity while still keeping undertones from it's 2000 year long history. The city is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, meaning the beautiful blue water is never very far away.
If Barcelona is a place that you are thinking about visiting, be sure to get your passport first. You will be surprised how much simpler and more convenient the passport application process is when you do your passport business online. Not only is it easier and more convenient, but you get your passport much quicker as well.

See It All
Barcelona is a big city comprised of several smaller districts. Each of these districts has its own very unique sort of atmosphere, and some like to plan their vacations around this fact. The Old Town district is called Ciutat Vella, and this is home to the Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gotic. Barri Gotic is a great place to walk, as the narrow streets and beautiful Gothic buildings are so exemplary of Barcelona life.
Las Ramblas, also located in Ciutat Vella, is the most famous street in Barcelona. The atmosphere is electrifying, with the talented street performers, restaurants, and shopping. Eixample is a separate district, one that features art nouveau buildings. Gracia is a district that is very cosmopolitan, and Barceloneta is home to the beaches and seaside cafes.
Tibidabo is a huge mountain to the north of the city from where you can look down and gain a spectacular view of the city. There is also a very beautiful church at the top of the mountain, and there is a legend that says the Devil tempted Jesus with a promise of the whole world. You can take a tram or walk, both are incredibly scenic and astoundingly beautiful. Montjuic is another place to visit in order to get a great view of the city, and it even has a cable car to take you to the top, which is fun in itself. Montserrat is another mountain that houses a famous monastery, and there are plenty of hiking trails as well.
Many of Barcelona's attractions are within a few minutes' walk or ride of each other, and La Sagrada and Hospital de Sant Pau are an example of this. La Sagrada Familia is easily the most popular attraction within the city. It is a Roman Catholic Basilica that is actually unfinished; its architect died before the building could be completed. However, it has been declared that construction will finally be completed on the 100 year anniversary of the architect's death. Hospital de Sant Pau is still a functioning hospital, but it is an excellent example of the modernist movement of Barcelona.
Barcelona has something for everyone of every taste. Deciding on things to do is really up to you and depends on the sort of things that interest you. There are a variety of great art museums, including the Dali Museum, and the food in Barcelona is considered some of the best in the world. The nightlife has a reputation for being awesome, and the beaches are always a great place to stop and relax. Just don't forget that you will need a passport. Go online, where you can get your first passport, or even obtaining a damaged passport replacement.
