Really critical information in here. I belong to quite a few affiliate networks and this is a good reminder that it is worth the extra work it takes to incorporate them here.

Thanks for this. I am thinking of taking the plunge. You helped me decide to do it.

Great information for anyone looking to start with Affiliate Marketing. I used to get good sales from Commission Junction, but the last 2 years my sales have dropped to virtually nothing. I think it's their domains being blocked that is partly the problem, I know Spybot blocks them for a start so ads won't display. Lately I have had better success with Buy.at and Darwin. Great job here, blessed.

I have an affiliate account with Amazon but had trouble making the modules look good so I went back to the regular Squidoo Amazon modules. I signed up for Commission Junction but never did anything with it. I do use AllPosters and I really like that. I know I need to get on the ball and do more. I will...eventually
    Thanks for sharing

Thank you SO MUCH for this lens. I needed something like this to feature on my "Is Squidoo a Scam?" lens, where I give the scoop on affiliate marketing (among other things). There are other lenses about affiliate marketing on Squidoo, some well-written, but bless them all -- affiliate marketers have been trained so well not to give anything away for free, and they all want to sell me a book to tell me how it's done! Which I respect. But I just wanted a write-up to tell newbies how it works... suspicious newbies who may not be willing to plunk down hard cash for a "proven system" before they've been convinced the whole idea is NOT a scam!

Anyway, so yeah. Gonna feature this one. :) Five stars and a few wavy tentacles.

Tons of great info (as always) - I plan to keep this lens handy... :)

Excellent question! If you are not ready to start with full-fledged affiliate marketing, that is fine.
    1. You can add it to your existing lenses later. They always need to be updated.
    2. You can still sell stuff from the Amazon, Ebay, Zazzle, and Cafe Press modules on Squidoo. And yes, I would add those.
Add items related to your topic. You will find that Amazon and Ebay always have SOMETHING related to your topic. And it is amazing what people actually buy when they start shopping.
  • AdrienneJenkins Jan 31, 2009 @ 5:59 am | delete
Right now I'm focusing on content just learning about how to create a great lens. I was going to wait a few months before I even attempt affiliate marketing. Should I try sooner?

  • lakeerieartists Jan 9, 2009 @ 2:45 pm | in reply to aj2008 | delete
AJ, I am going to disagree with you on this. There is a wide range between having a lens that promotes a product and a lens that is "spammy". A lens that promotes a product will say upfront that it is promoting a product, give you the benefits of the product, show pictures of the product, and tell you why the seller recommends the product in an open, clear manner.
A spammy lens will not really describe the product, will repeat the same one or two line claims over and over, and try to lure the customer into something with exaggerated or untrue information.

Here is an example of a great product lens (you will have to copy the link into your browser because I have html turned off) http://best.trackball.ever.com/ This lens is written by CleanerLife who writes some of the best product lenses I have ever seen.

Remember it is not bad to want to earn money with Squidoo.

Very informative lens. I use all of the above! Good job
  • aj2008 Jan 9, 2009 @ 11:27 am | delete
Very clearly laid out and lots of helpful links and info. One of my goals in 2009 is to make more of affiliate links but it can be a fine balance between publishing a good lens and a Spammy one, methinks!

This is very helpful information. I have not yet tried CJ, but will do that soon. Thank you!
  • spirituality Jan 9, 2009 @ 7:47 am | delete
I knew most of this - but on your recommendation I'm going to try CJ :) hope they pay out directly to Europe though: that's a deal breaker for me (though paypal will do as well).
  • seedplanter Jan 8, 2009 @ 11:18 pm | delete
Bravo! You laid it out there clearly. This is excellent advice: "However, your long lasting traffic will be coming from searchers on the rest of the internet who are looking for information on your topic. Those are the ones to spend your time marketing to."

Thank you! I'm lensrolling this to my Squidoo-related lenses. Five *****'s & a fave.
  • Snozzle Jan 8, 2009 @ 11:31 am | delete
You seem to have covered it all. I've never had advice before of what to wear as an affiliate! Nice touch.

Great lens. Agree entirely that affiliate marketing is the way to go, there are some excellent programs about. Though I did fall out with CJ, but that's a long story.

    Best wishes,
    Mike.

Lots of GREAT info. This is the first time I heard the term Lens Cloud.
Now all I have to do is reread this several times, then focus on getting more lenses that will work with this marketing idea.
    Good job. 5*****
  • lakeerieartists Dec 14, 2008 @ 1:58 pm | in reply to Margo_Arrowsmith | delete
No Margo, you do not need to be an affiliate in order to earn Amazon money from your lens. If you use any of the Amazon modules, Squidoo is the actual affiliate, and they will distribute the money to you. That money will show up on your dashboard. And the advantage of the modules is the features they offer like the MP3 player, and how easy they are to use.
This works the same for eBay modules, and Cafe Press.

  • Margo_Arrowsmith Dec 14, 2008 @ 5:14 am | delete
Well I am adding this to my Margo's Squiddo Library lens, "How to Squidoo" Branch office!

One question, you list Amazon up above. Does that mean that you have to be an affliate in addition to having them buy from your lens? Do you get more that way?

    ***** to you!
