Chiang Mai, in the far north of Thailand, is the center of Thailand's famous handicrafts industry. It is the main reason we based our "Lanna Charm" business here, everything we would ever want for our shop and website is at hand.
The local markets are a treasure trove of handcrafted fashion accessories, home decor products, fabrics and artworks.
Our Lanna Charm website was originally set up as a retail outlet for handcrafted handbags, shoulder bags, scarves and home decor soft furnishings.
But in the last couple of years we branched out into wholesale mango wood and bamboo products, and a wide range of home decor related products.



We also export hand carved soap flowers in mango wood, coconut wood, plastic, glass and saa paper containers.
This area has some of the best lacquerware artists in Thailand, and we stock a wide range of lacquerware trays, plates, bowls, vases and jewelry boxes.
Chiang Mai is also a good place to source marble products, such as vases, bowls and garden water features. And nearby Lampang is a treasure trove of wood carvings and beautiful ceramic products.

Saa paper is another locally produced craft material which can be used to make a wide range of useful and attractive items.
It makes wonderful gift wrapping paper, and is a natural medium for drawing and painting.
Also it is used to make such things as gift boxes, photo albums, greeting cards, carry bags, notepads and book covers. When specially treated it is also used to make parasols and umbrellas.



Saa paper is made from the bark of the young mulberry tree branches. The bark is dried thoroughly to remove the sap, then soaked in water until the bark is softened. This "mush" is then boiled in a blend of caustic soda and water, the caustic soda aiding the "breakdown" of the fibers.
Following this boiling process the mixture is then rinsed to remove the soda, and the remainder is sieved to collect the fibers which are then dried in the sun on drying racks.
Colors can be added during the manufacturing process by way of natural vegetable dyes.
Designs, labels, company logos etc. can be applied to the saa paper after it has dried.

Hand carved soap flowers are one of the best examples of Thai handicrafts.
Most soap flowers are carved from an ordinary looking cake of soap, and become just as beautiful and delicate as a real flower. This ordinary looking soap is actually quite special, it is selected because of it's good carving properties and it's strength. Some soap crumbles when carved into thin slices.
The offcuts are used in another way. They are melted down and mixed with plain flour and molded into shape by hands and fingers.
The painting process is a bit of a mystery, most soap carvers do not like to tell anyone how they achieve such a lifelike finish. But I believe one way it is attained is by mixing water, food coloring and a drying agent and spraying with an air brush. The effect is amazing, and soap flowers are often mistaken for the real thing.
They are one of the greatest gifts you can give, last for a long time, and keep their good looks and aroma much longer than real flowers.
But the best thing about them is that each soap flower is unique, handcrafted by a very talented Thai craftsperson.

The rolls we use are 12" - 14" wide and up to 30 feet long, which are ideal for making bags etc.

This beautiful stone washed cotton is hand woven in Myanmar, then the stone washing is carried out in Thailand.
We use it for making handbags and shoulder bags but because it is so soft it would be perfect for making clothing and scarves.
The cotton fabric comes in rolls approximately 26 feet long and 3 feet wide, and is available in a wide range of colors.

Bamboo rice containers in a wide range of sizes, shapes, colors and designs.

These beautiful and versatile containers are created by hand weaving strips of bamboo into the basic shape of the finished product, which is then "plastered" with a blend of teak sawdust and resin, sanded, and finally hand painted. ( The lids are made in the same manner. )
They were originally made to store sticky rice in, to keep it fresh and clean. Some restaurants in Thailand still serve their sticky rice in these containers.
They are surprisingly light considering how sturdy their construction. The lids simply push on, and are held in place by knotting the carry cord.
Our bamboo rice containers are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors and designs, and look great around the home, and are one of the most useful items of home decor you will find.
The designs include traditional Buddha images, floral motifs, banana leaf and lotus leaf styles, geometric patterns and the beautiful "Lanna" language scripts.
Sizes range from the tiny ones you see on dining room tables, used as toothpick holders etc, to the large "urn" shapes which can reach six feet in height.
Their many uses include storage vessels for such things as coffee, tea, sugar, salt etc, or just about anything you can think of. Becoming very popular in restaurants as both condiment holders or simply as decor.

Our handcrafted butterflies can really brighten up a room, either hung on the wall or from a piece of string as a mobile.

The body is made from teak wood and the wings are 3mm plywood, adorned with bright colors, mirror sequins and gold colored wire.

The body has a wire loop for hanging on a nail or hook.
The large size butterflies measure 11" long by 13" wide.

Celadon is a term for ceramics denoting both a type of glaze and a ware of a specific color, also called celadon. This type of ware was invented in ancient China, primarily in Zhejiang Province. Celadon has since been spread to various regions in Asia, including northern Thailand.
