How to Use Extra Squidoo Modules for Fun

I'm writing this lens on how to use the Squidoo modules for extra fun to help people create their lenses . . . and to create great lenses.

You might be new to Squidoo and you might be staring at a brand new, mostly blank page wondering what to do next. You might feel unsure about what to include, and how. And you might feel overwhelmed and kind of frustrated about using the modules.

You might have been a part of Squidoo for a while, but you're just not sure how to create the best lenses you can, or maybe you're ready to learn a few new "tricks."

Whatever the case, you'll find some simple steps, how-to information and ideas here on Squidoo's modules for extra fun, as I call them. In this category, I include:

1. The Countdown module
2. The Orbitz module
3. The Word of the Day module
4. The Wikipedia module
5. The Igo Green Tip of the Day module

This lens is part of a series that also includes how to use:

1. Squidoo highlighting modules
2. Squidoo modules for interaction
3. Squidoo selling modules
4. Squidoo promotional modules
5. Squidoo photo & video modules
6. Squidoo writing modules

Check them all out and enjoy this lens! If you have questions about anything here, please ask in the module towards the bottom - - I've added a space for your questions and I'll reply to them.

1. The Countdown Module

How to Use the Countdown Module

The Countdown module is so much fun. I love it!

What events can you think of that are relevant to your lens that you could count down to? Do you have a seasonal lens? What holidays are coming up? Is there a celebration day associated with your lens topic . . . like the birthday of the author you're writing about or the anniversary of an organization that you're focusing on? How about your own birthday on an About Me lens?

Whatever you use it for, it's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write a title, subtitle (optional) and description (optional). Then name the event (e.g. New Year's Eve) and select when the event takes place (month, day, year). Click save and the countdown clock appears on your lens!

You can see a Countdown module below, counting down to New Year's Eve because it's fun!

2. The Green Tip of the Day Module

How to Use the Igo Green Tip of the Day Module

I love the Green Tip of the Day module for all my lenses that are related to "green" things - - things that are environmentally friendly. It's a cool, fun way to encourage your readers to incorporate simple things into their daily lives that help the planet.

It's one of the most simple modules to use once you've added it to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write a title, subtitle (optional) and description (optional). Click save. The tip appears on your lens and shows a new tip each day.

3. The The Orbitz Module

How to Use the Orbitz Module

The Orbitz module is great on any lens that features a place in our world. It's obviously especially good on lenses that are specifically travel lenses.

An Orbitz box is placed on your lens and your visitors can book a trip right from your lens by entering where they're coming from, where they're traveling to, the date of departure and the date of return. They can select their desired services (e.g. flight, car, hotel) and when they click "find," they'll be taken to the Orbitz site to solidify their details.

And you make money from the sale for yourself, or for your charity!

So, how do you get this cool, fun module on your lens? You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

Then, all you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write a title, subtitle (optional) and description (optional). Click save and the Orbitz box appears on your lens!

4. The Word of the Day Module

How to Use the Word of the Day Module

OK. I'm a word nerd and I love this module! I include it on any lens that has to do with words, such as my lens on word puzzles and games. You can include it on lenses that are book reviews, lenses that are about writing, or lenses that related to words in any way.

Whatever you use it for, it's really simple to use once you've added the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

All you do is click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor. Write a title, subtitle (optional) and description (optional). Then indicate how many headlines you want to include (it only shows one word though), whether or not you show excerpts (it shows the definition) and how frequently it should be updated. Click save and it will show up on your lens.

5. The Wikipedia Module

How to Use the Wikipedia Module

The Wikipedia module is an extra, fun addition to a lens that contributes to the text.

Add the module to your page. You can check out my Squidoo Writing Modules lens to learn how to do this if you're not sure.

Than click the orange "edit" button to enter your editor.

Write a title, subtitle (optional) and description (optional). Enter the name of the article - - you'll need to know this ahead of time (and don't enter the URL; they want the actual name of the article). Click to check the article and make sure the connection works. Indicate how much of the article you want displayed on your lens (the intro or a certain number of characters). If you select the intro, the intro to the article will show on your lens with a link to read the rest. If you select a certain number of characters (usually less than what's in the intro), only those characters will show up with a link to read more. You can also choose whether or not you want to display the article's main image on your lens. Sometimes this is a good idea. Sometimes it's not. You'll have to decide based on what the image is. Click save when you're done.
