Extreme Paper Quilling

Paper Quilling 3-D Sculptures

Paper quilling is a form of paper craft where long thin strips of paper are tightly rolled around a "quill" to form a filligree or openwork design. The quills originally used were the tips of goose feathers hence the name quilling. It is a paper craft practised by the genteel crowds of long ago who had a lot of leisure time on their hands. But this lost art has made a comeback.The origin of paper quilling dates back to the 13th century where nuns curled the gilded trimmings from bible pages to create a work of art. This lens is about paper quilling 3-D sculptures where possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Excellent video tutorial

The sky is the limit.

All of these 3D paper quilling sculptures were made by my co-worker's brother. These amazing artwork were fueled by a creative mind , a very fertile imagination, and a lot of patience.

Blue and white peacock

type=text

The male peacock has iridescent blue-green plumage. This paper quilling sculpture shows the "eyes" of the fanned tailed as oval-shaped coils.

Red and white peacock

Wowwing the crowd

type=text

In art, anything is possible. This is the one and only red and white peacock I have ever seen and it sits on top of my office cabinet. It never ceases to catch the attention of visitors who stop by my cubicle.

The Ultimate Chariot Race

Who will reach the finish line?

type=text

This is a fantasy-inspired version of a frog in a chariot race. It is the frog slave driver prodding the slow crustacean to go faster. I would say it's a long way to Tipperary.

The flaming firebird

This is an interpretation of the Phoenix bird also called the fIrebird from Harry Potter's "The Sorcerer's Companion:A guide to the magical world of Harry Potter."This makes a great Christmas tree ornament or a desk decor for the Harry Potter fans.

The difference between a tortoise and a turtle

paper quilling red turtlepaper quilling green turtle

The red tortoise has feet and live mostly on land and is a vegetarian while the green turtle have flippers and live primarily in the water.

paper quilling blue crab

This blue crab is a scavenger and is always on the lookout for dead blue crabs and leftover decaying flesh.

Pig and frog warriors

Squealers vs. Croakers

If a battle ensued between the pig and frog warriors, who do you think will win? Will the piggies be squealing with delight and the amphibians be hopping mad?

A yellow sticky reminder

Paper quilling does not need a lot of glue to hold the ends of the coiled paper. This is to avoid residue buildup and warping the paper. Glue that dries clear, like Elmer's Glue, is the best to use with a dab at the end of a toothpick or T-pin.

Caterpillar or a snail or a scatterpillar?

type=text

A snail does not have legs but has an outer shell. A caterpillar has legs but does not have a shell. But this littler crawler not only have legs but a shell to hide in. I call it the scatterpillar.

Check out the different coils and patterns to use in paper quilling here. Learn about the different shapes, like square, teardrop, diamond, bell, and many more.

Grasshopper or hoppergrass

Not just all legs

The grasshopper is not only all legs which make it an Olympian hopper. The grasshopper is also all ears. You heard it right. The ears of a grasshopper are on the knee joints of its legs.

Red-hot feline

A cat's meow

paper quilling red cat

This is the simplest of the paper quilling sculpture for the cat fancier. Art without the presence of a cat is not a cat's meow.

This little piggy says "Wee, wee wee, all the way home."

Note the combination of different colored paper in the coil which makes the body of this cute piggy more visually pleasing.

Paint the town red in this cycle rickshaw

type=text

This human-powered cycle rickshaw or pedicab is a common mode of transportation in South Asia. Some passenger seats are behind the driver, on the side of the driver or in front of the driver. In the case of this cycle rickshaw, the driver sits on a tadpole seat and uses his leg power to pedal the passengers or tourists around. This beats paying a membership fee at the health club, plus one gets paid developing good leg muscles.

This is a finely constructed paper quilling tricycle influenced by the flaming hot rod design. It is still foot-powered and has a back seat with a covered roof.
