Going Extreme

Ranked #10,093 in Sports & Recreation, #252,354 overall

An extreme sport is one that is considered to be dangerous and counter cultural. Usually, these kinds of sports involve height, speed, a high level of physical exertion and technical skill.

What makes something an extreme sport is not exact and many sports have different levels which can be taken to the extreme. Surfing and mountain biking as well as skiing are all usually considered to be non extreme sports, however, as seen in some of the videos shown here, they can be taken to the extreme depending on how, where and when they are done. One thing is for certain, they all involve a large degree of adremnaline!

This page brings together some of the most intense video footage of some of the most extreme sports out there - see people base jump from cliffs, slackline thousands of feet up in the air and ski glide down massive mountain faces.

Ski Gliding The Eiger

Extreme is a visually stunning 45 minute journey into the soul of adventure featuring a cast of world champion athletes. Combining incredible extreme sport action with narration from the athletes and an eclectic, contemporary soundtrack, Extreme explores the paradox of human nature: facing fear from the edge of life. The film takes viewers to the edge of outdoor adventure sports like never before; skiing and snowboarding perilous untouched mountain peaks; climbing vertical frozen waterfalls and red-rock spires; surfing some of the largest waves ever surfed and windsurfing gale force winds. This mesmerizing film is now available for the first time on DVD and in spectacular Blu-ray high definition.

Extreme Surfing

I'm always impressed by surfers and their ability to ride those big waves. Here a guy rides one of the biggest waves in the world, an impressive sight to see.

White Water Kayaking

Certainly white water kayaking can be an extreme sport. Videos of people dropping from huge waterfalls abound and are quite impressive, but I selected this one as it shows some of the skill needed to be successful in huge and challenging white water conditions.

Slacklining

Slacklining, basically walking a tight rope strung between two points, is becoming increasingly popular these days. The higher the better! Here is a Yosemite highball slackline.

Written by an international array of authors, including some prominent extreme athletes like Jake Burton and Arlo Eisenberg, this book looks at a variety of issues and concerns within the new action extreme sports that are gaining popularity throughout the world. For each sport, an interpretation is presented through two essays: one written by a scholar active in some aspect of research for the given activity, and another by a practitioner/athlete who practices the sport. The juxtaposed essays confront questions about the essence of sport such as, What is sport?; How does it originate?; and What is its use, value, and function?

Often there is disagreement as to which sports are extreme and which are not. Perhaps its more the level to which you do them that counts.
