Extreme Writing Now Social Network for Writers

Do you wish you could write more? Do occasional outbursts of ink flitter away in your mind as you stare at the 13th load of laundry for the day? Do you write bad checks? If the answer to all of these, or even just one of them, is yes, then why not check out Extreme Writing Now (EWN)?

EWN is a virtual hippie commune that exists for all writers. Freelance, poetry, fiction, flash fiction, essays, article writing, forged documents of passage; if you write, you'll find it all here. We will give you all the support and cheerleading you can handle.

We're free. We're fun. We're delicious!

The Best Writing on TV

...Californication

Californication has the best writing for a television program I've ever watched. I'm sure that if you have heard of the show, you know it is a bit racy. It is a LOT racy, but that does not take away from the depth of dialog, character development, and other facets of truly spectacular writing that will make folks stand up and notice.

Hank Moody, the show's protagonist, is a New York writer who was transplanted to L.A. after his writing became wildly popular enough to have had a hit movie made from one of his books. Hank is a superstar, but he remains to be Hank, which is a man who speaks his mind and really doesn't let anything, save one, ruffle his feathers.

That one thing that makes vulnerable, the one thing that Hank wants more than anything else, is to get his girlfriend of 10 years to come back to him. Ever since she took their daughter and left, he has been blocked.

This scene is a flashback scene and you won't find a cooler letter written to a girl anywhere...

Extreme Writing Now | A Bit of a Past

If it weren't for WordPress jail...

In March of 2009, I had three WordPress.com blogs. One was dedicated to my biker leather e-commerce site, another was totally Squidoo related, and the last was just for me and my writing.

Extreme Writing was fun and energetic; so much so that I carried on an unhealthy relationship with it. I fed it on a regular basis, stroked it, cooed over it, and dreamt about it. We were inseparable, yet I had no problem sharing it with a guest author from time to time.

My blog and I explored fiction, essays, and freelancing. We worked well as a team and were gaining an audience (seems I tricked a few people into thinking I had talent). We were flying high; soaring with the eagles. At least that's how it felt.

Then one day in July, I received a Twitter update that informed someone couldn't view the blog. Panic! Sweat! A few choice words were thrown to the air when I tried to log in and found out the blog had been archived.

What was worse was that I was given no explanation, no chance to state my position (even though I don't believe I erred).

It was time to take action. I decided it was time to take matters in my own hands and make my own rules. No more handcuffs and tethers for me. I purchased the domain extremewritingnow.com in early August of 2009 and began blogging at Extreme Writing Now... cont.

Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Shambhala Library)

Goldberg will catch readers interested in writing with her opening confession that she was a ``goody-two-shoes all through school'' and should hold them until she pulls the last page from her typewriter, one ``Sunday night at eleven.'' Part writing guide, part Zen philosophy, and part personal diary, this book has the smooth, fast flow of a conversation with a good friend who, while struggling with her own writing, has picked up more than a few tips that she eagerly shares. Definitely not another ``how to write better themes'' or a rehash of the writing process,.... read the entire review at Amazon...

Extreme Writing Now | Then and Now

...a little fun for my friends...

...I not only moved my writing blog to EWN, but I also set up my Squidoo blogging there as well. The old Squidoo posts are still there (content is content). I was feverishly posting to keep the momentum rolling, but I started to run out of steam as my 6 month run for Squidoo Giant 100 was in full swing, the opening of Crabbysbeach blogging community for Squidoo lensmasters, and more than a handful of other projects were stacking up.

Eventually, I was so busy serving everyone else that my lens building and my precious Extreme Writing Now blog was put on the back burner. Six full months passed before I posted at EWN...SIX FULL MONTHS!

I'd had enough, it was time to get back in the saddle, so on April 10th, 2010 I had announced I was back. And I was. Posting several times a week, my blood began to feel fresh and alive again. But, there was something missing, or maybe something was wrong. Then it dawned on me...this was all for me and I felt like a creep for not sharing.

So, after getting several WPMU and BuddyPress installs under my belt, I figured that would be the way to go; one blog, many writers, and as much fun as we can possibly have doing it.

June 28, 2010 was the official opening of Extreme Writing Now as a social network for writers.

After setting up the network, I got the word out and fledgling writers such as myself, have begun to hang their hat at EWN. All of us, the site belongs to everyone now, are striving towards making EWN a relaxing atmosphere to learn, experiment, and stretch our writing desires.

So far, it's working.

Writing in a New Convertible with the Top Down: A Unique Guide for Writers

Amazon Price: $12.80 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

Like the first edition, but with three new, post-publication chapters, this second edition of Sheila Bender and Christi Killien's book on writing inspires by example. The bulk of it is a series of letters between the two writers, in which they discuss life and writing and how the two overlap; the letters are interspersed with writing exercises that develop from the correspondence. The metaphor of the convertible is an apt one; like a Sunday afternoon drive, this book unfolds in an unhurried manner.... read the entire review at Amazon...

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published, 4th Edition

Amazon Price: $1.37 (as of 05/30/2012)Buy Now

So many books about how to get your book published are really either books about writing or the disguised memoir of an acquisition editor. But a person trying to get their first book published really just needs some bare bones advice about the mechanics of publishing. When should you send a query letter instead of a proposal? When should you write the book first and when should you just spec it out. When do you need an agent... read the entire review at Amazon...

Teachers

...never enough kudos for these two...

Carrie White and Kim M.O. have perhaps had the biggest impact on Extreme Writing Now to this point.

Not only is Carrie the Site Advisor, but she is hosting a weekly series of posts titled Carrie's Writing Tips where she is teaching us about all the types of writing she can. Anyone who knows Carrie's work knows it is precise and enjoyable. Join us every Sunday for Carrie's tips.

Kim started prompting memoir writing based on the Natalie Goldberg publication Old Friend From Far Away about writing memoirs. Kim has been prompting us every Monday, and the submissions have been not just enjoyable, but deeply moving as well.

So THAT's where you've been hanging out! Well, good to see you pop in on the SquidU forums and on my lens. :) Me, I've just recently gotten back from a few months overseas, and now I have to get ready to do some extreme writing of my own--my first book-length non-fiction project. But I'm putting that off for a bit until the cold weather really sets in and I don't mind being inside as much. Anyhoo, I'll have to mosey on over and see what this Extreme Writing Now is all about.
