Exuma- The Obeah Man

Macfarlane Gregory Anthony Mackey, better known (if known at all) as Exuma.
The Bahamian born musician is the type of artist that cannot compare to any thing else. If you are into the very strange and beautiful. The eerie and unexpected. Then Exuma's music may be for you. I want to give you my personal insight on this very enchanting musician. I want you to hear his music, and let me know how it speaks to you. Do you like it? Do you hate it. Nonetheless, I will bet you won't forget his chilling riffs, and haunting voice. With his style of music, your bound to eighter hate it, or love it. I am one who came out on the "like" end, so let me give you a taste and I can also give you a taste of the Obeah Man, and see what kind of flavor he leaves in your mouth.

Exuma

Obeah Man

Exuma

According to sources Exuma was born in the Bahamas, but he claims that came from a lighting bolt from an extinct planet on his first album "Exuma". This is the introduction Tony Mackey gives us. In an illustrative song called "The Obeah Man"
Obeah Man tells us how his birth was an earth shattering event, how he mingled with Charon (the boatman from the River Styx) and Hector Hippolyte, a well known Vodou priest, or houngan. This first track is truly impressive, starting with a chilling wolve's howl, the sound of frogs, and progresses to a steady beat, chime of bells, percussion, whispers... then comes Exuma's chilling voice. coarse and gray.. this is his story.

Voodoo-lore, in many Caribbean beliefs, the. Obeah men were thought to steal the shadows of men, and recruited those very men to help them in order to have their shadows restored...( the shadow man from Disney's the Princess and the Frog)

This song is crucial to the understanding of this artist, which is why I chose to feature it. This is the point where you keep reading or close the page.

I see fire in the dead man's eye

Mama Loi , Papa Loi

Althought my introduction to Exuma began with The Obeah Man, let I would like to share the first song I every heard from the musician. I was captivated, ( voodoo spell?). This song is so visual. For some strange reason, when I hear this song.. I picture a hot humid swamp, just before dawn, sweat, the golden sun, and a moment of peace. An quick reflection before the nightmare begins. This song is based on the voodoo belief of reanimation of the dead, yes, you heard me right; zombies.. The wonderful thing about this song, again is the array of sounds, the tambourine, the voices of mystics, and the eeriness of it all.

Mama Loi, Papa Loi

sit back, and visualize

The sun is shining in the night
Zombies walking in the broad day light
Zombie he done lost his soul
Zombie he don't ever get old

Lord of darkness king of light
Come, come here on this stormy night
There is no star in the sky
I see fire in the dead man's eye..../i/p

Monkberry

Obeah steals McCartney's shadow?

bannana moonThis rendition of Monkberry Moon Deilight really surprised me when I heard it. It is very different from his the other tracks I had heard, but it was catchy, and his interpretation of Paul McCartney's song really penetrated my mind. His haunting voice transmits so much emotion, raw unpolished emotion. The starting riff gets you right away, with a rhythmic and ear catching tune.

This song actually reminds me of the well known song, Day -O the bannana boat song. You know...Day-O me say, day-o, daylight come and me wanna go home.... . I actually enjoyed the upbeat, light0hearted Exuma. Songs like this are actually limited when his music is concerned, so I rather enjoy it.

Search, explore

Half the fun is finding it.

Exuma was had very high ratings by the music industry, yet, his music was not a huge sucess, he did not make much money from his record sales. Tony Mackay passed away in 1997, he had died in his sleep.

His music was extremley hard for me to find when I was first introduced to him, and finding information on him was equally as hard.

But half the fun was getting there.

That is why I'm not going to give you a sound clip of Dambala, Seance in the Sixth Fret, or The Vision.
Because you'll probably enjoy the search, and if you've gotten this far down in the lens, you have a geniune probably hava a genuine interest in this artist, and I don't want to take away the exploration experience.

Trust me you won't regret it.

Heard Enough

I want his music!

So you heard enough to convince you that Exuma needs to be in your collection?

Ive seein the obeah man performed once in freeport bahamas in lucaya. That man was my idle for my Bahamian music, well i should say music in general. The way he change the sound of his voice and the amount of instruments that was fused together to make such rhythm & style. This truly the way music was suppose to be made...in your own style with your own love, dtive, passion and creation. anyways thats my five cents. www.stileet.com Facebook: Stileet Rns Freeport Bahamas.

Never heard of him either but intrigued. Mama Loi, Papa Loi strikes me as one of those songs you can't NOT listen to know matter how the music strikes you. I like the raspy tone. Nice voice! Deep and passionate in an eerie way.
