Russian Faberge Egss, the perfect masterpieces
The original eggs were made by the company of Gustav Faberge, a Russian jeweler and craftsman, in the late 19th century. The highly adorned eggs, which became the symbol of the Faberge brand, began as a simple Easter gift from the Tsar Alexander III to his wife. The eggs become increasingly more intricate as the years wound on, with many opening to reveal hand-crafted surprises. The gift giving tradition was carried on by Alexander's son Tsar Nicholas II. The Russian royalty amassed a collection of 50 of the Imperial Easter eggs.
Fifty six Imperial eggs were made, forty-four of which have been located today and another two that are known to have been photographed. Another twelve Easter eggs were commissioned by Alexander Ferdinandovich Kelch, a Siberean gold mine owner. However, the Imperial Easter egg collection commissioned by the last of the Russian Czars is the most celebrated.
The Imperial eggs enjoyed such fame that Faberge made some 15 known eggs for private clients. Among them is a series of 7 eggs made for the industrialist Alexander Kelch. In addition, 8 eggs were made. They are not as extravagant as the Imperial eggs, and are not as original, often repeating designs that originated with the Imperial eggs.
The House of Faberge was staffed with some of the finest goldsmiths and jewelers of that time. The business was divided into several small workshops, each with its own specialty. In addition to the fabulous Easter eggs, the workshop also produced table silver, jewelry, European-style trinkets and Russian-style carvings. The two master jewelers most responsible for the Faberge eggs were Michael Evlampievich Perchin and Henrik Wigstrom. Born in 1860 Perchin became the leading workmaster in the House of Faberge in 1886 and supervised production of the eggs until 1903. Those eggs he was responsible for have his MP (MP-Michael Perchin) markings. All signed eggs made after 1903 bear Henrik Wigstrom' s HW mark.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Pratt collection is the largest public collection of Faberge imperial Easter eggs outside Russia. The full Pratt collection numbers approximately 150 creations from the Faberge workshops.

One of the most famous collectors of faberge eggs, is Malcom Forbes. Malcolm Forbes first major acquisition of Faberge egss was the Duchess of Marlborough Egg in 1965. Purchased through auction, it cost nearly three and a half times the estimate. Malcolm was torn between the thrill of acquiring the spectacular piece and the fear of having overbid due to auction fever. However, his worries were quickly alleviated when Alexander Schaffer, the leading authority on Faberge in the USA at the time, identified himself as the underbidder and invited Malcolm to view several Faberge Imperial Easter Eggs in his possession. Proving to be a serious collector, Malcolm Forbes acquired the 1911 Bay Tree Egg, the 1894 Renaissance Egg and the 1911 Fifteenth Anniversary Egg by the end of the following year.
You can be also a faberge eggs collector, or at least the beautiful imitations that are made all over the world.
