Fabulous Fall Tea Party Ideas

What type of tea party you're having indicates the type of menu you use. There are three types of afternoon tea parties. These days however, the lines between the different types of tea parties are more blurred. Tea parties are now held for bridal showers, baby showers, birthdays, graduations, craft groups, book clubs and more, I'm sure.

The three basic types of Afternoon, or Low Tea are:

A cream tea, where the menu calls for tea, scones, jam and cream. A tea party in its simplest form.

A light tea features more than one flavor of tea perhaps, scones and certainly sweets like petit fours. Nowadays, butter cookies, cupcakes and/or muffins can be served too.

Finally, a full tea, which is an actual meal ~ has different teas, sandwiches or appetizers, scones, and a variety of desserts including cookies, cakes and pastries. Full tea is also known as high tea, and is essentially...dinner.

The selection of teas for an afternoon tea may include some lighter black teas like Earl Grey Crème Black Tea, Black Dragon Pearl Tea, and Thousand Mountain Jasmine Black Tea.

Tea time in England was usually four or five o'clock and it was all over by seven o'clock. Tea rooms now serve tea from about three to five o'clock. Instead of just tea, bread, butter and cakes, the tea menu now may include three particular courses served specifically in this order:

Savories - Finger sandwiches or appetizers

Scones - Served with jam and Devonshire cream or clotted cream

Pastries - Cakes, cookies, shortbread and sweets
