Delicious Old-Fashioned Cookies

When I was growing up in the 1960's, grandmothers were a very important member of the family and were always found in the kitchen. They knew how to bake and always created masterpieces of culinary perfection that filled the dinner table.

I had one grandmother, in particular, that was always baking something delicious whether it was for the family, a group she belonged to, or the church. She would whip up cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, tarts....well, you just name it and she probably had the recipe for it. Not that she ever needed a recipe - I don't remember her looking at a recipe in all the years I watched her in the kitchen.

Today, nothing even comes close to the taste of grandma's baking - unless it's made with love.

Today's average cook is looking for the quick and easy meal or buying something already prepared. Recipes, of mouth-watering, homemade meals and desserts, seem to be almost a lost art. Studies show that many families don't even sit down together at the same dinner table anymore.

But, Grandma's favorite recipes are making a huge comeback. Groups are forming, new recipe books are being produced, and the fine art of cooking and baking is making it's return to stardom. Why? It's anyone's guess but my own belief is that some people are looking for special meals or items they can create for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, and such.

Imagine bringing a homemade dessert to the annual school bake sale with your face beaming with pride. In your arms is a platter of old-fashioned molasses drop cookies (like those pictured above), made with love and care. That platter, with it's melt-in-your-mouth goodness, will probably be empty within 5 minutes!
