Fabulous Lens O' Beer!

Ranked #19,178 in Food & Cooking, #342,182 overall

...but not just any beer... GOOD BEER!

We're talking craft brew here.  This lens is about your finer craft-, micro- and home-brewed ales and lagers, variations thereof, and the places where you can obtain and enjoy them.  Full Sail, Bridgeport, Hair of the Dog, Deschutes, Rogue, Lagunitas... and smaller places like Roots, Beach Chalet, and Laurelwood... are the focus here.  Coors, Budweiser, Miller, Schlitz and all those other slug-bait beers may have their purposes, but there's nothing spectacular about them that makes them worth drinking or blogging about.  Not here.

The Fabulous Map O'Beer
Platial is like a social network site based around geography. You can map individual places and then talk about them, or organize them into maps. I've organized all my favorite beer-related places into the Fabulous Map O'Beer, which has now taken on a life quite its own.
Blog O' Fabulous Beer
While the Fabulous Map O' Beer Platial site is great for talking about, say, the beers of Full Sail Brewing Company, it's not quite the most appropriate place for comparing the seasonal offerings of Full Sail in comparison with those of the Anderson Valley Brewing Company. That place is the blog.
Map of Good Beer near Good Transit
This San Francisco- and Portland-centric map shows brewpubs and other sources of good beer within walking distance of high-quality transit. It's an open map, and constantly evolving, so feel free to add something to it if you know of any glaring omissions.

Good Beer, especially from the San Francisco/Portland corridor

An exploration of the glories of delicious frothy beverages. As with any exploration, the key is to explore. How do you explore beer? It's easy!!

**PUBS!!**

A pub is a place that serves generally decent beer and some food along with it. Short for public house, pubs are where people go to see other people while they consume their beer. The Fabulous Map O' Beer has an extensive list of pubs in the Portland/San Francisco corridor, which also happens to be the corridor between the two best Beer Cities (Regions) in the United States, as ranked by the July issue of Celebrator Magazine (see the Blog O' Fabulous Beer for more).

**BREWERIES!!**

Some pubs brew their own beer. These are known as Brewpubs, and are generally considered to be the pubs of the highest quality. Other breweries, however, may not have the resources/licensing to serve beer and food on the premises, but will still accommodate you if you swing by for a visit, generally by offering a tour of the premises followed by a tasting of their frothy selections. Hair of the Dog and Anchor Steam are two examples of breweries without pubs that are still worth visiting for the tour and the tasting, though they couldn't be more different from one another -- Anchor Steam is a four (five?)-story warehouse with a full wooden bar on the top floor and guided tours (arranged in advance) most days of the week, while Hair of the Dog is a single-story garage/warehouse where tours can be arranged in advance and the "bar" seems like it's on wheels and may actually be hand-made...

***BREW YOUR OWN!!!***

Or, you could make your own beer! Sure, it sounds difficult. And let's face it -- it does take time. And patience. A whole lotta patience. You don't brew it in the afternoon and then drink it a little bit later in the afternoon... for that kind of convenience, we have brewpubs. They brewed it last month and you can drink it this afternoon. No, brewing your own generally entails a bit over a month and a half of lag time between the beginning of the process and the drinking of the first full-fledged (mature) sample of the product. But, oh boy is it worthwhile. Some of the best beer ever comes from this line of inquiry.

*** The Beer Store ***

Finally, you can just go pick up a 6-pack or a tallboy of a frothy beverage, and bring it home. Hopefully it's a fabulous brew!
