About Facebook's 'Bejeweled Blitz'

A twist on the classic PC game

Facebook Bejeweled BlitzIf you've ever played the classic version of Bejeweled, you've experienced a much more stress-free game than the one seen on Facebook. Facebook's version known as Bejeweled Blitz is a tough game for one reason - the game is limited to a 1-minute round. So, you have 60 seconds to get the highest score you possibly can.

That's a problem for some, because there are three major factors in play here - beating the clock, having insane reflexes, and being able to keep making matches without stopping and staring at the screen like a brainless dolt. Fear not, though -- there are legitimate ways to get some really high scores in this game, if you know what to do, what habits to break, and practice proven methods.

The focus of this tutorial is for people who already know how to play Bejeweled to get a much higher score than they ever had before. If you're here, you probably got sick and tired of seeing your friends hit insane scores of 400,000+. You probably wondered if they were on drugs when they did it, or if they hacked Facebook. Honestly, both of those are a big "no." They just know the secrets. All of which are taught below :)

The 2 Most Important Facebook Bejeweled Tips

Seriously, the most important ones, ever.

A high Bejeweled scoreHit Those Multipliers ASAP!
Never forget that your number one strategy to getting a high score in Facebook Bejeweled is to destroy all multiplier gems as soon as humanly possible. Multiplier gems are the ones that have 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, etc. on them. They appear when large explosions happen on the screen. They'll add that number multiplier to every point-giving action you take for the rest of the game. It is impossible to get a high score unless you work your way up the chain of multipliers during that very short 60-second run you have.

The bulk of your points will happen at the very end of your game if you have cleared a healthy number of multipliers. In the matter of just a few seconds, you can easily blow away the score you've attained for the first 3/4ths of the round thanks to the multipliers! This is how the high scorers do it in Bejeweled.

"Blazing Speed" + Fast Reflexes
The second necessity, in going for a very high score, is to get "Blazing Speed" as soon as you can. It's a feature that is indicated by a speed meter on the upper left of the game board (don't ever take your eyes off the gems to look at it, though!) Once it fills up, the screen goes up in flames and every match you make, even if its 3 gems, will result in a Flame Gem-style explosion.

Most of my highest scores, particularly in the low 500,000 range, have attributed to me having destroyed the first 4-5 multipliers, then hitting Blazing Speed, and creating at least 5 explosions until Blazing Speed ends, with about 10-15 seconds left on the clock.

This will be you ;)

Tactics & Strategies

Tip #1: Free Multiplier Fridays

Unlimited multipliers all night - woohoo!

On Friday nights at 3-7pm Pacific, 5-9pm Central, and 6-10pm Eastern, Bejeweled removes the price tag on the fifth bonus power, called "Multiplier," entirely. That's right, you can keep playing the game while using it an unlimited number of times [without having to spend Bejeweled Coins], meaning that every single game you start is guaranteed to have the 2x multiplier gem on the board.

Considering that the top priority in Bejeweled Blitz is to break all multiplier gems as quickly as possible, this one is an advantage that goes without saying, and it's also the most advantageous of the five bonuses. With that tidbit of knowledge, attempt your high score bonanza on a Friday night.

Tip #2: Beat the Starting Signal

Ready...set...oh wait, you went already.

Beat the A classic trick that most players discover is that you have nearly three whole seconds to "cheat" and stuff in as many moves as you can while the announcer (who sounds like Optimus Prime, might I add) says "One Minute...Go!" During this time, it's possible to complete a few regular matches and possibly get a Flame or Lightning Gem...simply go straight for the 4 or 5 gem combos as soon as you see them.

Tip #3: Use Hyper Cubes to reach multipliers

Don't let multipliers sit around!

The worst thing you could do is to break a Hyper Cube in Facebook Bejeweled the instant its created, with no rhyme or reason. Hyper Cubes should sit and wait to be used until a multiplier gem becomes available somewhere on the screen.

Keep a few things in mind about them -- if you don't use a hyper cube and the game ends, the game will choose the absolute worst gem on the board to use it on. So, if you have tons of greens, blues and yellows and only a handful of oranges, it will automatically use the Hyper Cube on the oranges. If you blow up a Flame Gem next to a Hyper Cube, the Hyper Cube will automatically be used on all gems that are of the same color as the Flame Gem that blew it up. Long story short: use a Hyper Cube on the same color as any inaccessible Multiplier Gem on the board IMMEDIATELY, before something unexpected and annoying happens to it!

Tip #4: Using Lightning Strategically

How to harness the power of lightning

A Lightning Gem used during an "unfilled gem gap" as seen below results in a lot of missed opportunity, as it is only destroying a sparse number of gems. If you had triggered the lightning gem while the board was full, it would have given the maximum payout.

Lightning Gems can be a real nuisance during the game. You never know what the board will look like after it pops, and you'll be scrambling to make matches when it's done triggering (sometimes, wasting valuable seconds). However, it's best to work further away from the area where a Lightning Gem triggers, so that you can never stop working as the new gems fall once it disappears.

Try to leave all Lightning Gems up on the board until the very end, and even let them auto-destruct either through a natural chain reaction, or when time runs out. Otherwise, set them up to be destroyed when a multiplier gem is finally in their path.

Keep in mind, lightning gems tend to set off a chain reaction of matches after they disappear - a perfect consequence for "Last Hurrah."

Gaps in a lightning path mean less points

Tip #5: The Mid-Air Maneuver

Requirements: really, really fast reflexes

I'll admit, this one takes REALLY fast reflexes. When a Fire Gem blows up or when a match is made, everything above it will "hang" for a few milliseconds. If you're fast enough, you can "grab" a gem and snap it into a falling column fast enough to complete a match.

This can also be done without the need of setting off a Fire Gem. If a match completes, you can complete yet another match by pushing a gem into the falling column. In using this method, you can most certainly complete a match that would otherwise have never happened if the gems continued to fall into place.

In the screen shot below, a blue gem can be swiped from the right-most column into the left-most one to merge all four blue gems together.

Things to be mindful of during gameplay

A few more strategies to beat your high score at Bejeweled Blitz. Once you know your 'game plan,' get in there and execute it!
  • Don't sit too close to your monitor - the closer you are, the worse your peripheral vision will be. You'll need that to 'look ahead' and see what your next move will be...like chess.
  • Never, ever stop moving. Don't wait to see what gems appear after an explosion - complete some other matches while they happen. Don't get distracted by the colors/animations/timer/speed meter. This game has a lot of distractions. Never take your eyes off the next gem match, though.
  • Don't waste time attempting to "harvest" lots of Fire/Lightning/Hyper gems to get massive combos. Just go for the multipliers at all times.
  • On rare, random occasion: a "Moonstone" will be offered to you at the price of 25,000 Bejeweled Coins before a round begins. It only happens once per day, if you do get to see it happen. It puts three Lightning Gems on your board from the very start. If you can afford it, go for it - it will clear up much of the board and get things started very early on.
  • Master the usage of your peripheral vision to hit the "Hint" button. Using a Hint sure beats staring at a screen for 5+ seconds and not seeing where the next match is.
  • This is an old trick from my childhood days in front of the NES: sometimes you can perform better at the game with the sound off. Sound effects can add to distraction and anxiety.
  • As with anything else, if you're tired - your performance will suffer. You'll need to be sharp and focused if you're striving to get a high score.
  • When you get to the top of your leader board, be sure to razz your friends. Several classic ways to do so include posting a replay clip of your magnificent Bewjeweled run to your Facebook page, and attaching a comment to it, like "beat my high score, chumps!" ("Suckers" will also suffice).
