Facebook - Worth it or Not

Do you think having a Facebook Fan Page is worth the effort?

Yes, I do.

LisaGirlGenius says:

They are worth it for the right niche or topic. Our company has dozens of them that are updated daily or weekly. There are definitely some topics that create good user engagement, more so than others

JoshK47 says:

Definitely worth your while - it's a great way to keep people aware of your "brand."

ajgodinho says:

I think it's a good avenue to make use of mainly because it's been able to rise up the ranks and build credibility. However, I think it's become a little too saturated now.

pimbels says:

I think if you have enough fans.

writeonbro says:

Sure, if you are serious about being a lead dog. After all they are the only dogs that get to see the scenery.

No, it's just another way to eat up time.

Why Squidoo and Other Online Writers Should Have a Facebook Fan Page

Backlinks and social media exposure

things to doBacklinks are an important feature that many lensmasters have a tendency to ignore. I know I did. It's not enough to create a lens or online article and expect the world to trample the doors down to your page. Sure, your lens and pages are indexed by Google, Bing and the rest. But sadly, it's not enough. You need to help those little Google bots and search engine spiders and build a web of links so they realize just how important your work is.

How? Well, one way is to create backlinks to the work you do. If you have a blog or a website, that means backlinks to every page you want people to visit. NOT just to the home page. If you have a Squidoo lens or page, then you need to build a web of backlinks for every one you create. One important way to do that is by using social media.

Twitter helps with backlinks. Posting to your Facebook account helps. But creating a Facebook page dedicated to your Squidoo work and/or your online work is another way that is packed with value. Why not give it a try? Choose one page and build a web. Then move to another. Pretty soon, your web will be plenty big enough.

What Do You Do When You Visit Facebook Fan Pages?

Do you like me? Do you really, really like me?

Why does anyone make a Facebook Fan Page? Well, the #1 reason is to get people to "like" them. "Like" in social media terms is similar to liking someone that you come across in everyday life but when it happens online it requires an action by you. It's not enough to say, "Oh, that's nice" and surf on.

Today, in social media terms, a Fanpage and other online writing articles come with "like" buttons. The author is asking you visually to "like" them, to click on the button and to count that page as a "friend" of yours and add them to your cast of "likeable" fan pages.

What that means for the person who is doing the "liking," is that they are saying they deem your Facebook Fan Page, your online article, worthy of being added to their personal or their own fan page wall. That says to their friends that they like your page and they want to let others know it. They are allowing the posts from your fan page to show up on their wall for their friends to see.

For you, the person with the fan page, it's important that the visitor take that extra step and click "Like." It expands your social media network. It provides the potential for new readers and viewers. In today's social media culture, likes are capital.

So what do you do? I hope, of course, given what I've said, that you will find value in my Facebook Fan Pages provided below. I hope you will like my work and will want to see more. So I hope you will "like" me.

If you have a Facebook Fan Page already, I urge you to add your Facebook Fan Page to the link list provided toward the end of this article so you can gain more exposure, too, and capture more "likes."

“... I hope you will "like" me.

Do I Have a Facebook Fan Page? Yes!

Vikk Simmons on Squidoo & Online

Truth to tell, my Squidoo Facebook Fan Page is brand-spanking new. I went on Facebook and searched "Squidoo" to see what others were doing and I decided to broaden the scope a bit to allow for postings not only from my Squidoo work but from other online places where I write. That's why I added "& Online." This will primarily be a source to see what I'm writing on Squidoo but I will definitely add other things as they come up.

This is a pretty big bucket with several streams pouring into it. You never know what I'm going to write about. Dog lovers, yes, you'll meet my dogs.

Click through to my Vikk Simmons on Squidoo & Online Facebook Fan Page link below and "like" me, please! I soooo need an audience. :)

Questions to Ask Before You Make a Facebook Fan Page

Tips and suggestions when considering creating a Facebook Fan Page

What are others doing? Creating a Facebook Fan Page is easy. You just follow the directions and in a matter of minutes your page is ready to be filled with content. Here are a few suggestions to think about as you consider whether you want to create a page or not.Triangular number 10 with triangle
  • 1What do you want your Facebook Fan Page to look like? There are many looks to Facebook Fan Pages. You probably have already "liked" a few, yourself. Take a few minutes and roam through your pages and pages in general to see what others are doing. If you like something, write it down so you won't forget.
  • 2Do you need or want a custom-designed Facebook Fan Page? Some people have custom-designed pages. They come with custom welcome pages, opt-ins, store pages and eye-appealing graphics to capture attention and to brand. Do you need this to get started? No. Might you want to later? Maybe. Make a list of those you particularly like and what it is about them. When the time is right, you'll be ready to make any additional changes you want.
  • 3Will the basic Facebook Fan Page be sufficient to get started? Fancy Facebook Fan Pages are nice and often have additional features added to increase their exposure and value. Do you need that? No. Start at the beginning with Facebook's basic Fan Page and build from there.
  • 4What are others doing with their Facebook Fan Pages? When you are looking at other fan pages, see what is being offered. Is it just an unending list of links by that person with little engagement or other informational value? Fan Pages can be done simply for backlinks but will that attract a readership? Is there something else that you can do?
  • 5Why are some Facebook Fan Pages successful? Look at successful Fan Pages, read articles about them and try to see why they are successful.
  • 6Do you have a social media strategy in mind? Consider developing a social media strategy so that you're not just shooting blind. How will everything interlock? How can you maximize your time and get the most value of what you are doing?
  • 7Can you Identify your target audience? Who do you write for? Then make sure you search out the people in those areas and let them know about your new Facebook Fan Page.
  • 8What will your Facebook Fan Page be about? Why are you creating a fan page? What is it that you want to do? What is its primary function? Whether it is backlinks, engagement with readers, increasing your social media capital or just doing one for fun, it's helpful to identify what your primary reason is so that you stay on course.
  • 9Is it easy to create a Facebook Fan Page? Yes, yes, and yes. All you need is a Facebook account and you're ready to go. If you do a search, you'll find many quick guides but Facebook takes you through the few steps in a matter of minutes. You'll need a name and a profile photo.

The Many Faces of My Facebook Fan Pages

Spend time visiting Facebook Fan Pages made by others

For starters, please consider dropping by my Facebook fan pages, and, if you enjoy them, liking my other Facebook Fan Pages. Each has a different purpose but some of the audience overlaps. As you'll see, I am busy scribbling away nearly every day.

My Rules on Using Facebook Fan Pages

How to tame the social media beast

I give a lot of thought to how I use my various online endeavors and that includes the Facebook Fan Pages. Do I want to spend forever sitting at the computer every day doing Facebook? No. Do I want my fan pages to stay active and engaged with my readers and viewers? Oh yes. So what's the answer?

As you can tell, I have quite a few Facebook fan pages, but I don't spend hours tending my online garden. There is method to my madness.
  • 1Everything you post shows up in real time on the walls of your fans and friends. So have a little charity. Don't post 53 dozen links and comments in one sitting. First, they'll all pop up at once and it might annoy some. Second, you lose the punch of an individual post and potentially lose a reader's interest in commenting because they've gone on to the next thing you've posted. So don't dilute your efforts.
  • 2I import my blog posts directly into my fan pages. That way I don't have to manually take care of that.
  • 3Mix it up on my fan pages. Fans will find additional information there. I'll often post links that serve as prompts for my writings or may have been part of research I was doing.
  • 4Post things that are of interest to me that I'd like to share that are relevant. Relevant is the operating word. I have always enjoyed reading about the publishing industry so writers will find items from Publishers Weekly and other industry sites. Learning eBay means I'm sharing things I discover as I search and learn. Squidoo writers will find similar things targeted for writing for Squidoo and other online publishing platforms. So the lines are drawn.
  • 5Add a personal touch and let folks see the person in the writer. It's not all links and blog posts and listings and websites. Sometimes I'll share what I'm reading, how I'm faring with my writing and things of a more personal nature.
  • 6Remember: It's not always about me. I do try to connect with my readers and viewers and ask questions and seek out their opinions on things. I truly want to know what they think. I write because to me, reading and writing is a conversation. I like its reciprocal ebb and flow.
  • 7Set a time limit on how long you'll research to find items to post to your fan page. I update my pages quickly each morning. Occasionally, I will post a second or third item later in the day but usually strive for at least once a day on the weekdays with an occasional weekend now and then.

Facebook Fan Page - My Dancing Pencils

What's it like selling stuff on eBay? Online auction fun.

Because I sit on top of two households that have been combined, learning to eBay has pretty much turned into a necessity. My Dancing Pencils is how I am learning to live the eBay life in the midst of everything else I do including being caregiver for my 96 year old mom, six dogs, and 2 cats and trying to write. In essence it's all about my adventures and my learning, and because information sharing is second nature to me, I have a Facebook Fan Page now and have my blog in production.

Glad everyone is enjoying the read. Sherioz, It's not always easy to manage it. First, don't put pressure on yourself. Do it one step at a time. Set up the page, put it out there to get the first fans and when you have a link, share it. Don't get crazy. As time goes on you can expand your efforts. Trust me, I don't have a secretary, friend, kid, or anyone to help me--My six dogs are too busy with their own Squidoo pages to offer much help--and I take care of my 96 year old mom so it's definitely a challenge but every step moves you closer. Do what you can when you can.

I don't know how you manage it all. I'm overwhelmed just reading this. It's a great article and shows where I eventually should be aiming. But wow! Do you do all of this alone and without a secretary or other help?

Very well done and lots of good tips here on leveraging FB Fan Pages. I've been wanting to do one specific to my Squidoo work, but haven't had the time to do so. Just "liked" your Squidoo fan page. It will be interesting to see how Google+ shapes up in terms of SEO.
