This is a parody of Lord of the Rings - the Fellowship of the Rings. It has been retold through the narrow window of online interaction - the facebook status updates of the characters.... what would Frodo really say to Sam when no-one is watching? How many relationships has Pippin had? What groups would they join?

These updates not making much sense? Well, that's because you're only hearing the reactions... while most of the storyline follows the films very closely, it occasionally branches out into a bit of written canon as well. Or they argue about whether it should.

Canon and Non-Canon: The Storyline of the Facebook Fellowship

Which version of LOTR does this parody?

Most of the Lord of the Facebook follows along with the film versions of Lord of the Rings - one part for each movie. The extended editions of course, because those have all the fun extra bits!

Occasionally they will break into book canon or disagree over whether the films or the books take precedence - but for the most part, the story follows along with the films. Some of it will make no sense if you are not watching along (or have a perfect memory!) as, like all facebook updates, you are only reading their reactions, not seeing what actually happened (but hey, we all know the story, right?)
