Faces of Death VI: Dragon Attack!
Ranked #3,294 in Culture & Society, #72,950 overall
The Dragon's Lair
Dragon gods and goddesses have a long history. Often they bring life, but in anger or by accident they bring death as well. These faces of death are most often kind and giving, but they do have famous tempers.
As you enter the lair you feel hot air waft over your face. A rumbling growl grows into an ear shattering roar. Before you can react dragons surround you.

Dragons!
Raaaaahhhh!
Yup some do work with them. Dragons can be seen as gaurdian spirits, energy forms, or a distinct race as suggested in D J Conway's books. Witches work with dragons to boost spell powers or just to make friends.
Think of them with as angels with attitude. How can you contact them? Just want to. Dragons will show up it the life of sincere people who wish to work with them.
You can also try some cool dragon statues from the dollar store or mall, dragons pics from the net, or just leaving out a nice crystal or other small gift.
These beautiful creatures can be male or female, young or old and come in almost endless varieties. I'd suggest using any spell books on them as a guide as many dragons may not be listed. There are dragons native to US soil after all that are not listed in most books.

Ereshkigal
Ruler of the land of the dead and death herself, she was none too happy a goddess. Humans were terrified of her, the dead feared her, and her demon servants could not speak. She is famous for making her sister come into her realm naked and defenseless. She then killed her, because it just really made her angry that Inanna got to live in the wonderful world above. She did have a softer side though. She eventually let her sis go, but told her to send someone back to keep the balance. This turned out to be the cheating son of a..well let's just say Inanna left behind no grieving of faithful widow.
Ereshkigal was happy at last! A manly man to have all sorts of fun with. But she let him go too; after his annoying sister's constant weeping got on her nerves. But with a catch. He would have to spend half the year with her in the underworld.
She is the wife or consort of Kur, the great dragon or serpent. Who despite his bad behavior is truly good when it matters. She saw his inner beauty instead of his fierce dragon outside.
Gong Gong (aka Kung Kung)
After his defeat by Zhu-Rong Gong Gong crept away humiliated. Clearly, he sniffed to himself, the only thing left to do was to die. So he rammed his massive horn into the great mountain.
Well not only did this fail to kill him but it opened up a hole in the heavens. Most of the people on earth drowned, the few poor survivors burnt to a crisp. Luckily things could be repaired, but he became infamous for his attempt. Even today some call this poor guy a demon and blame him for death and destruction everywhere.
But he is one of the goods guys, and like all dragon gods controls life and death. For they bring the rains and can refuse to help if insulted.

Kur
The original OG
He is the great and mighty fire dragon who masters floods as well. It was Kur who brought the great flood, and Kur who kidnapped the sweet (compared to him) Ereshkigal to be his wife. He has massive wings, and is sometimes shown as a winged fire dragon with a nude woman beside or astride him.
Now I know we have something in our culture about a deformed man who kidnaps a pretty young woman. Gave her singing lessons I think. Then she learned to see beyond his outside to his good heart. They ruined the ending though because she ran off with some pretty-faced dip.

Leviathan
He is a remarkable beast with many differing descriptions. Sometimes he is seen as a dinosaur-like reptile who can move on land or in water. Most often he is a gigantic serpent or water dragon. His rarest and least shown for is that of an angel. For Leviathan is indeed an angel of death, having been sent by God more than one to destroy entire cities of evil folk. His awesome jaws are seen as the gates to Hell. Here we see the angel of Rabbinical lore happily destroying a city on God's command.
Lilith
Hide the menfolk! A foxy lady whose exact origins are wildy disputed. But we do know that she was a storm goddess and death bringer. Her perfect dragon form was somehow chaned into a snake to be the bad guy (sex change too!) in the Bible. She was a fearsome but fair goddess. Well a goddess? That just didn't sit well with the writers of a God-dominated society.
So suddenly she was cast as the first wife of Adam. She believed in equality which made Adam cry a lot because she wanted to make love as equals, not beneath him. Getting bored of Adam anyhow Lilith purred and winked ant God, and her told her His true name.
This enabled her to fly off and get wild with some demons in a cave. Man, did she enjoy herself. But of course Adam cried and the angels came after her. She laughed when threatened her with death as she had not eaten on of those stupid apples.
So as she had many offspring the angry angels vowed they would would kill off as many as they wish. This was a mistake. Lilith swore revenge and has seduced men to get more kids ever since. She is also blamed for stealing human children to replace her own.
The only way to get rid of this death is said to be the wind demon (wise one) Pazuzu. Yes, the one from the Exorcist films.
Basically Lilith has become the target for everything some males hate about women. Her sexuality has been inverted, her fertility profaned, and her very function as death. As death she is now seen as a dark goddess.
She protects women and children and isn't all that fond of men who don't respect her vital role. She still rules the underworld, storms, the night, and can bring disease and death when needed.
Modern witches seeking help with fertility, facing death, or simply in need of protection can and do still invoke her.
Why is she here? Remember the Adam and Eve story? Turns out the real snake was not the devil, but a certain snake or dragon goddess. I bet you know her name too! Her cult was powerful and much loved, and we can't have female dragony empowerment in a society ruled be males, can we?

Long Wang
All hail to the mighty dragon god! He is the supreme ruler of all dragon gods. Well at least to hear him tell it he is. Long Wang is a very powerful dragon, but being like males everywhere he must fight to retain his crown. Like all dragons he rules over life and death.Dragons can bring sweet rains to give life to the people. Or they may well cause killing droughts if offended by humanity's evil. Like all dragons Long Wang can also call up devastating storms to destroy evil. He is the face of death ever present in dangerous weather.
Mercury
The messenger. This fleet of foot god has the job of caring for and guiding souls to the realm of the dead. He will also protect them on the way. He is also the ruler of the sign Gemini. Fertility god as well. His caduceus of snakes is now seen in doctor's offices everywhere. Yes, there is a lot of debate about whter they are snakes or dragons. There's also debate on whether dragons were snakes, go figure.
He certainly has the dragon temper down pat. Approach with all due respect though, and you'll do fine.
Nagas
This awesome mountain spirits can look like anything. Normally they are snakes, pythons, half-snake half-human, or snakes with human heads. But they can appear as humans or animals too. Nagas guard the earth's treasures from wicked folk and give it to those who would share it.
All nagas answer to the naga king, Takshaka. He is death personified so that makes his servants death as well. But only if you are really wicked. Most of the time they chill out in rivers or over treasure living quiet snake lives.
Goddess help you though if you kill one in another form. Then the whole crew including the king himself will want revenge. All nagas are strong in magic and most will happily work with humans on the astral plane.
Oh, some people consider nagas to be a type of dragon. Some dragon statues are refered to as nagas.

Nergal
He had a great time with the underworld goddess, Ereshkigal. Such a good time that he came back later and took over via a military coup. She was just as determined to rule however, and they swore a pax for co-leadership. Nergal may still have two of his demons posted at each of the nine gates He still has his army of demons, though.
He was often seen as a winged lion with a man's head, but may have had both man and lion aspects as well. Nergal also had a dragon aspect as well as seen in the adab to him: "Warrior with head held high, respected lord, son who rises up to protect his father, Nergal, angry sea, inspiring fearsome terror, whom no one knows how to confront, youth whose advance is a hurricane and a flood battering the lands, Nergal, dragon covered with gore, drinking the blood of living creatures!"

Nidhogg
The dragon at the bottom of the world tree. He likes to cause trouble for mankind. But his favorite activity is devouring the corpses of the dead, for which he is always hungry. That he destroys these corpses may mean they are the dead unlucky enough to fall to him. Or this desruction may be needed to give new life to the world tree.
Nyami (aka Kaka-Guia)
Pele
Although she isn't listed as a classic goddess of death, Pele has certainly earned that title. She rules the powers of the underworld by ruling lava. It is that very lava that gave birth to the islands.Pele was notorious for seducing young lovers. One who happened to be the property of her sea-ruling sister. As Pele fled her watery wrath she would build fire pits on the island, which her sister flooded.
At last Pele reached an island with a fire pit (volcano) her sister couldn't flood and went back to seducing men. Who when they angered her she promptly turned into stones. She also used her lava and hot temper to destroy things whenever she was angry, which was often.
Pele also saved the earth from evil as well. When attacked by the dark forces she rallied all the powers of the underworld, including many gods and goddesses to destroy them and drive them into the sea.
Pele was helped in this by her brother, Kamohoalii, the king of the dragons.
She is also a goddess who died and was reborn as a shape-shifting spirit who still moves among us mortals. She can bring warnings, ask for a kindness then bless the giver. Pele is fond of hitching rides as a sweet old lady dressed in white, who dissapears before reaching her destination.
Pele rules the underworld forces of fire and lava, which she uses to kill the old and make way for new life. Without her consuming fires and lava, most of the islands if not all would be barren rocks.
Her lava also gives lfe, adding to the island's mass as it cools, and containing rich nutrients vital for plant growth.
Pele has a sense of humor too. She often sends images of herself in lava or smoke to reming people she is still very much with us.
Ping 1 (aka PingI)
Was he a river diety bent on revenge? A dragon god who slew demons? Well we do know that Ping1 was said to arise from the river on a chariot pulled by dragons. His title of Icy Exterminator shows us he had the powers of perhaps both water and ice to destroy his opponents. Most likely he is a largely forgotten dragon god, who either breathed ice or could cause dangerous ice storms.
Quezecoatal
He is the feathered or plumed serpent. It was this god who brought the Mayans the calendar and other higher teachings. He was a wise and just ruler while on earth, and his people flourished. But as often happens his priests turned from his holy teachings and became evil. Now our Quezy is the wise one so he knew this would happen. But he couldn't bring himself to be unkind even to these evil folks. Well the priests wanted all the power so they got the poor serpent god royally drunk.
He was so drunk he didn't even know they put him in bed with his own sister until the next morning. Humiliated and broken Quezecotal fled and ended up on the coast. Still grieving he built a pyre and cast himself on it, a last ditch effort to save his people.
But mighty gods don't just up and die. A transformed and now very angry serpent god tore through the underworld liberating all the souls in the clutches of evil. Then a nice recharge of lightning in the upperworld re-powered him into a super dragon god with a mission to destroy evil.
He now fights the darkness that once consumed him and destroys it wherever he finds it. He will return in full splendor at the end of time, ready to swallow the darkness and evil in the world forever.
For modern pagans he can be a guide into the afterlife. He improves all mental powers, and of course can easily reach the land of the dead. Some feel he will come like the angel of death and escort them into a new world. He is also seen as a caretaker of the dead as he knows what it is like both to die and to feel unwanted.
Sabazius
Phrygain ruler of the underworld, and death himself. This serpent god is worshiped only at night according to some traditions. Yet to others this god has links to the sun and is a sort of shining serpent, a solar diety as well. His name may be where the word Sabbath originated from. He is also a fertility god.
Saturn (aka Saturnus)
Poor Saturn has gone from a much beloved and gentle harvest god of old to one of the least liked death gods, in modern times. But he had his reasons to act the way he did. His own father was so evil that Saturn castrated him to save the world, not to mention unwilling womenfolk. He then settled down to a happy married life. But rumors of his children one day overthrowing him worried Saturn so much that he swallowed each baby whole. Sort of a symbolic male nurturing.
Well of course he was made to vomit up the kids, which were just fine. They then thanked Dad by killing him. In pity he was given a tiny but peaceful bit of the underworld to rule.
Here's is where things get tricky. When Saturn was in charge the whole universe ran backwards. Food literally exploded out of the ground in abundance and people who also grew out of the ground lived in peace. They didn't die either, since there was no mating, or at least not on a large scale.
Once he died the whole universe reversed. Food had to be grown, people certainly died, and war and famine stalked the land. He is seen as lord of the dead, one who harvests the dead, and a god with a volatile temper.
Oh his wonderful loving celebration and grand feasting is still with us as Christmas.

Takshaka
King of the mighty Nagas, or holy snakes that protect the teaching and good folks the world over. He is infamous for being a death that can get in anywhere. You see a king once was really nasty to a old beggar who would not speak to him. Turns out the beggar was a holy monk with vows of silence. His son cursed the king, seeing as how dad couldn't speak, vowing that the naga king would destroy him.
Well the king went and hid himself in a fortress atop a column, in the middle of a lake. There, he thought, he'd be safe. But death is not so easily cheated. The wily Taksaka told his nagas to disguise themselves as holy monks. He even sent them bearing gifts.
The foolish king thought the god liked him after all and let the monks in. One of his gifts was the naga king himself disguised as an insect. The massive snake roared in triumph as he took the king in his deadly coils.
Nobody seems to have liked the king anyhow as all his court and warriors fled. The naga king flew high into the air, so high that the fall when he released the king sent bits of king splattering everywhere. Then for good measure he burned the castle down too.
Needless to say this has caused some people to fear nagas as evil. They are merely protectors of the Buddhist code and good people everywhere. You just don't want to make them angry. Also remember that nagas are considered dragons in many cultures.

Tiamat
She is the Divine mother and goddess of the sea. She mated with the god Apu of the sweet waters and created all that is. This dragon goddess was slain by her own son Marduk, perhaps a sign of him replacing her in the pantheon. Her body became the night sky. But not before she revenged the death of her mate with her own dragon and serpent children at her side. She rules a just underworld where she is a loving mother to all her children including mermaids, humans and scorpion men who act as holy gaurds.
Tiamat's tears give us the sweet waters and her heart is still with us today. Dungeons and Dragons portrays her as the mother of chaos, and gives her a form with five heads. Interestingly the colors of the head and the fact that there are five can be linked to the good Mother Goddess of modern witches and pagans everywhere. You just can't keep a good goddess down.
Vajrapani
This is one Buddha who fights evil with a vengance. He is wrathful and the destroyer of evil. He turns evil against itself to destroy it in the world and in the soul. He helps us transcend evil thoughts and deeds. Varjrapani is armed with the thunderbolt. He is also the giver and creator of all skilled actions. This Bodhisattva (future Buddha) often wears necklaces and other skull accouterments. He is death to all forms of evil.Did you notice he has a snake or dragon with him in a lot of pictures? Guess what that little guy likes to do to evil? Good guess.
Zhu Rong
Dragon god extrodinaire, at least in his own mind. After helping from the heavens and earth he figured he was top dragon. That is until the dragon Gong Gong, also a god roared that he was top dragon. Well, you know how men get, gods or not. After a battle royale Zhu-Rong won and went back home to the heavens in triumph. He was and still is a god of the heavens and god of fire. He very much enjoys his role of heavenly executioner.Like all dragons gods he rules over life and death for humans. He can refuse rain or of course destroy with fire.
Dragon Dreams
To dream of dragons means good things. To place enchanted dragons around your home is even better. You've never enchanted a statue?!? Just hold it in your hands and ask the spirit connected to the statue to protect you. Be nice and say please.
Faces of Death Lenses
Face them all
I'm guessing you know the drill by now. Happy surfing!
- Faces of Death
- Far before recorded history humankind has seen Death as a God or Goddess, angel, demon, or friend. In the Catholic Church for example the archangel Michael is referred to as the Angel of Death. Ancient Aztecs, Egyptians, and all other cultures have some form of personified death. Here we will look at.....
- Faces of Death II
- Hey kittens! Hopefully you've surfed over from the first lens. If not, the whole purpose of both lenses is to help people face death. The best way is personification. Who better then, to show you than gods, goddesses, demons, angels or more?
- Faces of Death III: Death Checker
- You had to know I'd use that joke sooner or later. Welcome to the third installment of Faces of Death. As always I hope this page helps you face death, or at least come to terms with him or her.

- Faces of Death V: Death of the People
- The installments are like death, everywhere. I'm not trying to incite riots. Death of the people, as in man of the people? You get it? Good. The faces of death here will be the ones largely adopted by common every day people. No fancy attire required.
