Factor Y ~ The Focus Of A Resume

Session one at Factor Y is driven by the underlying theme of focus. With so many available outlets and avenues for finding success on or through the Internet, the need to zero in on our goals becomes tantamount, because with all the opportunities there are also twice as many distractions.

What better way to focus on ourselves than to create a resume or a Curriculum Vitae (CV)?

Resumes Or CV ~ Either Way, Advertise!

When being introduced to new opportunities, whether they be business ventures or employment possibilities, we often need an advertisement that displays what it is that makes us qualified for the position we are seeking.

More and more recruiting managers and Human Resource Departments are turning to the Internet in looking for qualified prospects to fill positions inside their organization.

From a recent Reuters' news piece:
"The LinkedIn Profile is really the resume of the future," Joyce said. "The 'resume' on LinkedIn is really the standard LinkedIn Profile, but it's very popular with recruiters looking for good candidates.

"You could build your whole LinkedIn presence from any Web-enabled phone."

It is becoming increasingly important to have an online presence when seeking new opportunities, so having a digital resume is an important tool to use when leveraging one's skills in the game of the "Job Hunt".

Yes, the ability to network on the Internet is important

ronpass says:

Increasingly recruiters are checking out a person's online presence which can serve as a validation of claims made. Besides networking is one way to grow professional competence and access new knowledge and resources.

mysticmama says:

Network, Network, Network!

KathyMcGraw says:

yes, people are busier now and they go online to weed through the junk

aj2008 says:

If the potential employer embraces the internet and all it has to offer then yes, a digital resume is important.

No, a digital resume and/or profile has very little use

I'm stalling on this one Alec. Who wants a 55 year old farmer on the Internet. In my experience here in Ireland I have been through the whole hog, believe you me. The overall theme was that I was over qualified for the jobs I applied to and underqualified for anything else. I was told to adjust my CV down. I did but as soon as I open my mouth they know. Didn't get the job I applied for sweeping litter on the streets (despite the fact it paid more than I ever got on the farms doing 90hr weeks and was a 40 hour/week) on the grounds that I didn't have enough work experience for it.

I've used SquidWho to build an autobiography with elements of my professional career. I think employers want to know the person as well as the competencies. I built my professional C.V. as a competency focused e-portfolio. I use the latter extensively as an organizational consultant. I think employers today are looking for flexibility, creativity, initiative and demonstrated Internet capability. I have multiple C.V.s to provide focused evidence for specific roles, e.g. trainer, consultant, facilitator, academic, etc. I think we have to use online capabilities flexibly to respond to employer's expressed needs.
