Factor Y, Session 1, Lens 2 ~ Selfless Promotion

The Bennies Of Selfless Promotion
Focus is the name of the game at Factor Y, and this week we are focusing on promotion. Promotion can pertain to a broad range of items, from job status and self promotion to product and "others" promotion.
Session One, First Assignment was all about self promotion, and this assignment will be about "others" promotion and the benefits that can be gained by focusing in on someone else and their goals and ambitions.
A litte effort given to a "Shout Out" can go a long way in helping self-promotion.

Three Basic Reasons To Promote Others
The benefits of promoting others are great in depth and quantity in everything we do as people. When one person touts another's attributes or efforts, the person doing the touting is seen to have a kind and generous personal brand, most especially if they are promoting other people that offer value. This action leads to more people listening to what both the promotee and the promoter have to say.
These values, when sprinkled with a hint of self promotion, build respect and confidence into us as individuals, let alone creating a force to carry the load of success.
Perhaps the the most relevant example of how and why to promote others can be seen in the process of the Re-Tweet (RT) on the micro-blogging platform of Twitter. The RT has great power on how how we project our personal brands.
From TwitterWatchdog:
1. A Retweet Provides Value to Your Follower(s)
One of the most important reasons why people follow you is for value. If you can provide value to your followers you will not only make your followers happy, you will most likely attract more followers. Providing quality content is always a great way to provide your followers with value. The first thing that comes to mind is sharing a link to relevant information that is from you or another person.
2. A Retweet Can Benefit Your Personal Brand
Retweeting will help build your personal brand as well as your follower's loyalty. If you point a follower to an external source that is truly relevant and beneficial to them, the amount of trust that person has in you will increase. The next time you post a link, whether it's to your website or to an external source, the chances of that person clicking that link are higher than before.
3. A Retweet Can Help You Build Relationships with Others
Retweeting someone else's content is an act of kindness, and others are likely to do the same for you. This doesn't mean that you should expect someone to retweet your content just because you retweet theirs. Remember, retweeting is all about providing value to your followers, typically people will not retweet a post of yours unless it's perceived as informative or helpful.
If you retweet incorrectly (sending Spam), this can actually hurt your personal brand and future traffic. If done right, a retweet can provide value to your followers, build your personal brand, increase future traffic, and build relationships with a lot of people in your niche. Happy Retweeting~
Obviously, the RT is only one example of promoting others, but the principal benefits are the same for any platform, including the Monday morning gossip around the water cooler.
Forgiveness holds hands with genuine selfless promotion, in divinity.
Do You Promote Enough?
Far too often we encounter those loud mouthed braggarts who are all "Me Me Me ", or those folks who are continuously blabbing on and on about something they have done. Too much self flavored jelly gets spread pretty quick and we quit reaching for the jar.
On the other hand, if we hear nothing but praises about other's products, thoughts, or good deeds, the promoter's value is often overlooked. We need to know about other people if we are going to find value in what they say or promote.
Do you think you promote others enough?

No. There's always room to promote others, even if sometimes I offer no value to those who listen.
OneFootPutt says:
When someone does an excellent job at something, there is always time to acknowlege the act. A visiting pitcher in baseball who throws a no hitter gets applause from the opposing fans, because they respect the feat.
Promotion for the sake of promotion tends to be fake. Promoting that great lens you saw on a topic you know nothing about, or could care less about shows you can spot quality, and I'll listen more the next time I see something from you.
Treasures-By-Brenda says:
How can I ever help those who have helped me enough? (An interesting sentence, hard to say, hope you can understand what it is that I'm trying to say.)
Spook says:
Can't quite put my head around the wording here. For a start I prefer to keep quiet about promoting. There's always room to promote others. Agree.Even if sometimes I offer no value to those who listen. Way I look at it is, perhaps I have nothing to offer, but they have.
Yes. I only promote those who add value to the lives of those around me.
aj2008 says:
As someone who is usually very self-critical, this is one thing that I think I do pretty well - a thread I started on SquidU asking people to promote other's lenses has had over 11,000 views. So as well as promoting others, I am always trying to find ways to inspire others to do the same.
Crikey, I hope that does not sound too much like self promotion ;)
OhMe says:
It is so important to promote someone who adds value to the lives of those around me and although I try to do this, I know I could do more so will focus more. I loved how you promoted Mimi's lens with the video.
Joan4 says:
I hope I promote others and with valuable content, especially. I know I can always do more. There is so much good on Squidoo to promote!
Promoting An Attitude
Older song, newer group, same message. Sometimes the best promotion goes beyond words. An attitude of confidence can be broadcast with just a look.
Follow us, it'll be difficult not to!
Promoting Our Biggest Fans
Session One, Assignment Two, is designed to provide a focus on another lensmaster. Furthermore, the focus is refined to a member of the RocketMoms group. Each member of Factor Y has been asked to choose a RocketMom and promote that member with at the very least, a lens.
There will be no problem finding quality promotion of those outside of Factor Y, because no one does it better than us.

A Shout Out For Selfless Promotion
What do you think? Is selfless promotion overdone? Or, is there not enough? What about a balance? Is there room for a little self-promotion and do you have guidelines for both?

SquidAngel Blessings to you!
Oh and a little tip - why not add a featured lens module at the end here to make it easier to find all the other excellent lenses in this series?

- I find promoting others much easier than promoting myself. There are so many gifted people on Squidoo and other places that go unnoticed by the general population. I think we should try to have a good balance of both self promotion and selfless promotion, but do think that most of us struggle with the promoting of self. This is a wonderful project and I look forward to reading more.

- This lens made me smile. Well kept secret is that promoting others brings the most joy to the promoter (I think). You'll always get back 10-fold when you think of others first.

- There are so many wonderful lenses and lensmasters on Squidoo that it is easy to find one to promote. This is a great lens that reminds us how important it is to remember others. Thank you.
