FADOA ~ Friends Of Aids Orphans in Africa

Ranked #659 in Nonprofits, #178,638 overall

~Where Every Child Counts~

Friends of Aids Orphans in Africa (FADOA) is dedicated to working towards the full integration of African AIDS orphans into their communities so as to enable them to live as normal a life as they can and eventually become productive members of their society. We need your help to assist the 80% of the total world AIDS orphans who live in Africa. Only 3% of the orphans receive any kind of support. Most importantly we need your assistance to moderate the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Some of the most obvious effects are:

The near-zero chances of a child's access to basic necessities such as shelter, food, clothing, health and education, when the child loses one or both parents to AIDS.

A rise in numbers of child-headed households, child care-givers as well as grandmothers who are forced by the demise of their children to take care of their grandchildren.

Eroded traditional family support mechanisms due to excessive demand from the needy.

High incidences of sexually exploited orphans.

High prevalence of school drop outs among AIDS orphans.

~Mission Statement~

Mission Statement (verbatim from website)

Our mission is to strive to give disenfranchised AIDS Orphans a chance to grow up healthy in body, mind and soul and to pursue their dreams alongside others in their natural environment.

Goal

Our goal is to contribute towards meeting the basic needs of AIDS orphans in Africa including food, shelter, clothing and education as well as providing health, social and psychological support.

To effectively utilize your dollars, we collaborate with local partner institutions in Africa that provide AIDS Orphans with the opportunities to get back on their feet and start more productive and joyful lives.

FADOA operates in four countries: United States, Cameroon, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Our partners in the United States consist of friends, organizations, associations and sympathizers.

In Africa we have partnered with existing non-government, religious and community-based organizations. Our Partners were selected on the basis of the kind of assistance they already provide to AIDS orphans as part of their work programme. Some of our partners have been selected on the basis of their potential and willingness to expand their services to provide assistance to AIDS orphans.

The intended primary beneficiaries of the Project are AIDS's orphans living in households or in institutions, orphans attending school and children affected by AIDS.

FADOA was founded by 3 retired staff of the United Nations (Ita Ekanem, Hannah Tiagha and Edward Tiagha) who served in Africa in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. They also served as senior professionals in their home countries before joining the United Nations. Among them, they have more than 75 years of experience working and aiding the less fortunate in Africa and the USA.

The people who work to make the dreams of FADOA a reality, The Board of Directors are as follows:

1. Ita I. Ekanem, Ph.D, VP and Treasurer
2. Moulie Ali Gibril, Board Member
3. Micere Githae Mugo, PhD., Board Member
4. Don Harris Oben, PhD., Board Member

~A Child is a Child~

In the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal, one of the most popular children's games is 'Funerals'. Here, one in five children is an AIDS orphan. They live alone or in orphanages, forced to grow up before their time. This unique and uplifting film follows a project aimed at giving these kids back their childhood. It chronicles their experiences as they come together to record a CD. The plan throws together boys and girls from different backgrounds, confronting stereotypes and allowing them to get to know each other. And what starts out as a community project soon becomes a voyage of self-discovery for all the children involved.

We are witnessing the complete annihilation of entire communities of people. Human beings like you and and me, infected with the deadliest virus known to man: AIDS. Spreading uncontrollably from person to person, the virus has led to the deaths of millions of fathers, mothers, sons and daughters. The most affected are children. This devastating disease has created over 13 million orphans in Africa alone. This has become a race against time, not just for Africa but for the entire human race...
