The Weekend Reader
Faefever is the third book in Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. In Darkfever MacKayla Lane is pulled from a world isolated from the harsh realities of life. Her sister died a brutal death in a foreign city 4,000 miles from home. Dublin's Garda called it a random act of violence. After receiving a belated message from her sister, Mac knew better. She didn't know who murdered her sister, but she was determined to find out.
Once in Ireland, Mac's world was turned upside down. Life as she knew it was an illusion. She was a Sidhe-seer, able to see both the seelie (light Fae) and the unseelie (dark Fae.) To make matters worse, she could detect the Fae's sacred objects. To survive she made a pact with the devil, Jericho Barrons. He would keep her safe as long as she helped him locate the Sinsar Dubh, the most powerful of all dark seelie relics.
The story continues in BloodFever. Caught between two powerful men, Barrons and V'lane, a Fae prince who could strip her of her will, and leave her begging for sex, Mac's not sure who to trust. Barrons was more and less than he seemed, and V'lane had lived for centuries. There was no end to the power he could wield. Would he even consider mankind when he took action?
Mac had to trust someone. The Fae and humans have co-existed for centuries, but now the wall between the two realms was as at risk of coming down. With the Unseelies freed, humans would be preyed upon until they were wiped from the face of the earth. Would MacKayla Lane be able to stop it?
Not alone.
In FaeFever Mac starts diversifying her resources. Barrons and V'lane had both saved her life on more than one occasion, but she still didn't totally trust either one of them. She didn't trust Rowena, the head of a clan of Sidhe-Seers, but there was potential in the rest of the clan. Mac found another resource in Christian MacKelter and his clan.
Rather than 'put all her eggs in one basket' Mac spread the trust around. They had to work together or the wall would fall. She wasn't about to let that happen.
Was her trust misplaced? Only time would tell.
Karen Marie Moning's Fever series is an awesome example of fantasy fiction. Through her words Moning spins a believable tale that is easy to visualize. In fantasy fiction that's a critical point. Their reality and ours do not jive. If the alternate reality is not clear, the reader gets frustrated and soon abandons the book. I had no trouble picturing MacKayla's world.
It is a fast paced story that is funny at times and fraught with tension in others. The ending surprised me, but I have faith in Mac. She is not the pretty piece of fluff the Dark Lord assumes. She has conviction and a great deal of untapped strength. She will prevail. I have to believe that. If there is no hope, what would be the point of reading it?
I thoroughly enjoyed FaeFever and will be standing in line at the bookstore on August 25, the scheduled released date for DreamFever, the next book in Karen Marie Moning's Fever Series.

"Pure evil stared out of her eyes, a cunning, bottomless malevolence that knew me, that understood things about me I didn't, and never wanted to know. Evil that celebrated its existence every chance it got through chaos, demolition, and psychotic rage."

Book Two
I used to think my sister and I were just two nice southern girls who'd get married in a few years and settle down to a quiet life. Then I discovered that Alina and I descend, not from good wholesome southern stock, but from an ancient Celtic bloodline of powerful sidhe-seers, people who can see the Fae. Not only can I see the terrifying otherworldly race, but I can sense the sacred Fae relics that hold the deadliest of their magic...
