Faerie Music: Frenchy and the Punk

Frenchy and the Punk (formerly The Gypsy Nomads)

Samantha Stephenson (Frenchy) and Scott Helland (the Punk) describe their music as "Gypsy Celtic Cabaret w/ tribal and punk elements and an undercurrent of the mystickal." With a description like that, it's only natural they'd show up on the stage at the Faerieworlds Summer Celebration in Eugene, Oregon in 2010. They also performed at FaerieCon in Baltimore, Maryland in November 2009. During this time they were known as The Gypsy Nomads. In March 2011 they changed their name to Frenchy and the Punk.

The music of Frenchy and then Punk can be raucous, with danceable old-world melodies combined with cheeky stories sung by Samantha, along with pulse-pounding tribal style drumming. With a little technical wizardry and theatrics thrown in for good measure, it can be hard to realize there are only two people on the stage.

Samantha Stephenson and Scott Helland

Samantha Stephenson, the percussionist and singer of the duo, has a voice that has been described as a cross between Edith Piaf and Siouxie Sioux. She studied art at The National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York City. Her dance training began at the Royal School of Dance in England. She has been a member of dance troupes in Boston and New York.

Scott Helland first gained notice performing with punk rock bands in Western Massachusetts including the legendary band Deep Wounds. He has appeared on over 25 CDs, including five solo CDs listed below.

As the Gypsy Nomads, Samantha and Scott toured all over North America since 2005. They appeared at many festivals with fantasical and mystickal characters including stilt walkers, fire throwers and jugglers. They also performed at steampunk, science fiction and cabaret conventions.

Their first tour as Frenchy and the Punk in April 2011 includes several steampunk venues in France, Germany and the UK, the Magical Faerie Festival in Canterbury and the May 1 Beltane Festival in Glastonbury.

About the CDs and MP3s

The CDs and MP3s listed above are available from CD Baby, a company for independent artists that produces CDs on demand and keeps an artist's work in their catalog as long as the artist wants it there. Most of the money a customer spends on a CD or MP3 goes to the artist. It's a much better deal for artists than the usual record label deal.

Moby D's Faerie Music Lenses

What is faerie music?

My definition of faerie music may be a bit different than others'. To me it means the music of people who have performed at Faerieworlds. Music presented at Faerieworlds can be Celtic, medieval, tribal and/or what is sometimes called "world music." The group Tricky Pixie summed it up pretty well in describing their CD Mythcreants as "Gypsy Celtic folk rock for naughty punk faeries."
