is this week's theme for our Blog Carnival, brought to you by A Pretty Rock. I present to you~
THE AUTUMN FAIRY CUSTOM EVENING BAG BY FAERYSPELL CREATIONS
He is a lovely soft sculpture custom bag that I commissioned as a birthday gift for my mother- in- law, Ruth, from the tremendously talented Jennifer of FaerySpell Creations. Jennifer is primarily a doll artist but she also creates whimsical and beautiful hats and purses. He is the acorn fairy as rendered by the British illustrator Cicely Mary Barker. Ruth adores fairies and the acorn fairy is her absolute favorite.
Jennifer did a fantastic job on the acorn fairy. He is even more beautiful than the picture shows. Ruth loves him and he is now hanging as art on her wall."
Robin Goodfellow and Marian, Queene of The May
Robin Goodfellow and Marian, Queene of The MayCurrent mood: creative
In the 17th century, Robin Goodfellow was one of the most popular faeries in literature. Several ballads were in print. Shakespeare said Robin Goodfellow was one of the many names for Puck, the trickster faerie.
To begin his masterpiece, The Golden Bough, Sir James Frazer relates the story of the ancient cult of Diana at Nemi, and the priest who stood guard over her sacred grove and bore the title Rex Nemorensis, or "King of the Wood". He was the consort of the virgin goddess of the hunt, the divine lover/son who died only to return again, as the greenery does each year.
The archaic title "King of the Wood" seems to sit naturally on Robin Hood's head. Even his name is sometimes claimed to have originally been Robin (of the) Wood, and he holds de facto sovereignty over the forest of Sherwood (or in some tales, Barnesdale).
Moreover, Robin is clearly the consort of the goddess. In the earliest extant ballads, he is devoted to the Virgin Mary, the Christian Queen of Heaven. Most often, however, he refers to her only as "dear Lady", an appellation that has strong connotations for neo-pagans; moreover, he speaks of her as being "both mother and may". Later in the canon, of course, Robin is joined by Maid Marian, in her role as the May Queen, an archetype of the goddess in her virgin aspect.
Robin at Midsummer:
Medieval Echoes of Ancient Pagan Rites
In the May Games of the 15th and 16th centuries, Robin Hood clearly became an archetypal personification of summertime. These games were celebrated at various times throughout the early summer season. Some towns held their games as early as April, while others waited until as late as July. The most common time for the Robin Hood games, however, seems to have been Whitsuntide, a moveable feast that took place 7 weeks after Easter, and could fall in May or early June. However, there is also compelling evidence to suggest that Robin Hood was, also strongly associated with the summer solstice, or Midsummer Day.

Peter Pan Doll Series--Peter Pan, Wendy Darling, and Tink
I love J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, and wanted to make a series of dolls inspired by his magical and beloved children's tale. This is Peter Pan, Wendy Darling and Tink. (These dolls are available for sale in my shop--please stop by http://www.faeryspellcreations.etsy.com if you would like to see more photos :)
The dolls' head, torso, arms from the elbow down and feet are entirely handsculpted (no molds used, ever) so there will never be a set quite like them again.
Peter is approx. 11" tall from the top of his head to the tips of his toes. Wendy is 9" tall. Their bodies are a wrapped wire armature which allows them to be very gently posed in many whimsical positions.
Tink is approx. 2 1/2" tall, and she is poseable, too :)
Peter and Wendy's faces are handpainted with a blush of artist pigments, colors that I mix myself. Their attire is created of assorted vintage and antique fabrics, suede, feathers (and real acorn caps!)
Tink's cute face is handpainted too, her gown is made from vintage fabric, and her soft blonde hair is hand dyed mohair.
Peter and Wendy's eyes are semi-precious hematite beads,-- his crazy red hair is made from eyelash yarn, and her soft curling brown hair is hand-dyed mohair, applied one plait at a time.
Thanks for sharing my world, and have a beautiful afternoon!
Jennifer

Newest Doll Project--The Fall Fantasy Fae
I wanted to share my latest creation here, the Fall Fantasy Fae.I'm quite excited about her, she's something a bit new for me...nearly 2 feet tall, she's definitely one of the largest dolls I've made yet.
Fall Fantasy Fae is the very first in a special series of one of a kind collectible dolls I will be creating for the holidays--they will combine both of my mediums--clay and softsculpture. They will all come signed and dated by the artist.
Here, I've handpainted the face, then needlesculpted it to add definition and a 3-D effect. This is then attached to the head and torso, which is sculpted from italian air dry clay.
The body from the waist down to the feet and the arms to the wrists is a strong wire armature, wrapped in cotton and cloth.
Fall Fantasy Fae's hair is soft hand-dyed mohair, and her gown and leggings are created from vintage fabrics, lace and ribbon.
Her hair is adorned with a removable garland of (fabric) fall leaves and flowers. There are more that accent her gown.
Her hands, feet and pointed ears are sculpted from polymer clay. She is poseable, and her hood is also removeable.
I've had a lot of fun making her, and hope you enjoy her :)
