Network Marketing... Do I Need to Make a List?

If you are in Network Marketing, in order to be successful, you need to be sharing your company with others on a regular basis. In order to do that, you either need to have a huge contact base and make a list of them, or have a way to generate leads on a regular basis. Most companies (and uplines) preach about making a list of everyone you know. Most people on the Internet will tell you that making a list and contacting friends and family is outdated. This article explains why telling people not to do some of the basics in Network Marketing is a huge mistake!

Are Internet Network Marketers Intentionally Setting People up to Fail...

or are they just doing it by accident?

Do internet network marketers realize how badly they are setting people up to fail when they promise them huge paydays with little or no work? It's even worse when they tell people not to make a list of people that they know because it's the 'old fashioned' way of doing business. Plastered over the Internet are seemingly infinite offers from 'so called' professional Network Marketers preying on the uninformed. They unscrupulously tell people that they can make ridiculous income without ever having to make a list and talk to people that they know. They are trying to teach people about building the better mousetrap.

Now, I am all for using the internet to generate leads and traffic. Hey, I'm doing that right now, but telling people not to do the basic concepts in Network Marketing such as make a list is a huge mistake on several levels, they are setting people up to fail!

First of all, most people, even the most well intentioned, are far too lazy to do even the simplest tasks required of an internet Network Marketer. Most people (even the most well intentioned) will never write an article, make a video, or create a squidoo lens even if the content were provided and they had step by step instructions on how to do it.

Second, understand the fact that well over 90% of people fail (more like quit) in this industry anyways. Therefore, even if you did everything correct, most people still will not do anything. Then to make things worse, the over promises by most of the Network Marketers, the 'only work a few hours a week promise', complicates things even more. They try one thing, they are not getting close to the promised hype, and they quit!

Third, it's even a mistake for the Internet Network Marketer himself (herself). They may get a lot of enrollments (at first). I personally, have no desire to enroll people just to see them quit. You get chargebacks, waste a ton of time with them, it looks bad to others on the team and it sends a bad message all around when people leave.

What's most ridiculous is that the solution is so simple! All that had to be done was not over promise in the beginning and have an easy duplicatable system available for the masses.

Of course, have an internet system available. Heck, sell it and make money... go you! But let's get real, most people can't write an article even if they wanted to. If most people did, in fact, write one, no one would be interested in reading it. Having people use a system that they are not suited for is setting people up to fail for sure.

The old 'make a list of everyone you know' system, however archaic it may be for you, needs to be there for most people. It will drastically increase retention for your team. If people have something to do, they will not get frustrated (at least not as quick) and they will stay longer. They may enroll a superstar and backdoor into a home-run (it's happened). Either way, you make more money!

The point is, signing people up just to watch them quit doesn't help anyone! Never over promise, it will always bite you. People remember what you tell them (and a whole bunch of stuff you never even told them). They definitely hold you to it. Avoid setting people up to fail. People quit when they have unmet expectations... just don't let it happen!

Your Opinion on List Building

Should New Affiliates Build a List

As this article discusses, these is a debate among Network Marketers if new affiliates should make a list of family and friend as a firs means of people to contact regarding their new business. In general, the 'old school' or 'upline' usually seem to recommend it, but most online marketers, seem to dismiss it.
