Failing Hard Drive

Ranked #4,636 in Computers & Electronics, #93,158 overall

Sounds of a failing drive

Is your external hard drive making noise? A certain amount of noise from your hard drive is to be expected. If you hear an extra loud scraping, grinding or tearing sound you have a real problem that need to be diagnosed and repaired.

Remember back to the time you bought your hard drive, that gentle hum and "whirring" sound is what you want to hear. A slight increase in volume is acceptable but if it is significantly louder you may have a problem.

WHAT IS THAT LOUD NOISE YOU ARE HEARING?

The loud noise emanating from your hard drive is likely the plates, or platters, in your hard drive. This is the place that you data is read from and stored at. They sit on a spindle that spins them around at a high rate of speed. Obviously and loud grinding noises are very bad as the plates are likely grinding together or one of the moving parts is broken or breaking.

WHAT CAN BE DONE TO REPAIR IT

Seagate=FailUnfortunately there is not much that can be done to repair them, with the low cost of these units it is far less expensive to replace the whole hard drive than to try and repair individual units within the hard drive. You need to immediately go and purchase a new hard drive or an external hard drive.

The important thing now is to save your data before you lose it. I would recommend getting an external drive and a replacement drive, just in case. It is always good to have a full system backup of your computer that you can have for emergencies. Even the most expensive and largest external backups (2TB) only cost a little bit over 100$ these days. When you think of the amount of man hours you spent working on everything that is stored on your computer that is likely an incredible bargain.

What can I use to replace my external and hard drive

I personally own two versions of western digital elements external hard drives. I have bought many of this brand externals over the years and. I have always found them to be extremely reliable. You can get 1TB, 1.5TB, and even 2TB versions of this brand from WD. Check out this WD Hard-Drive Site that has reviews, videos and everything you might need to find out more about this brand of hard-drive.
