Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions through the eyes of the Flight Director.

Flight director for most of the NASA missions, from Mercury to the last landing on the Moon writes about the space missions from his perspective. Fascinating look at the early days of space flight - before there were computers, wall sized plasma displays, and instantenous recalculations of orbits and rocket burn parameters.

More about the book...

Imagine sitting in the control room - space center - you are in charge of a spacecraft flying high above the atmosphere. On the wall of the space center, over the map of the globe, a plastic model, held up by wires, represents the spacecraft. As it moves in orbit, wires are adjusted to show its position. To communicate with your tracking station in Australia, you need to dictate a message that is then typed into a teletype to be transmitted "down under".
If you need to do unexpected change of course, the "unexpected" requires a couple of hours of calculations.
I am always amazed what those guys accomplished with the technology they had. Even the moon landing was done with less computing power than today's Playstation.

Gene Kranz writeup on Wikipidia

Gene Krantz on Wikipedia
Wikipedia gives a pretty good writeup of his accomplishments, ordeals, and people he worked with - legendary astronauts of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo era.

Quote from the book

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity, or neglect (or ignorance).
