So What Do We Do Now

Excerpt from chapter 13

Here's an exceprt from Chapter 13: OK. Great Idea. What Do We Do Now

"It's just a political reality: There are many officials in Washington, elected and otherwise, who like the FairTax proposal, but even today they are holding back to wait for a groundswell of support among their constituents. As soon as they see that growing surge of support, they will join in and use it to help pass the FairTax Act.

"That's where you come in. Inertia is everything in Washington, and the present income tax system has some massive inertia going for it. It won't be turned on a whim. The FairTax represents such a fundamental change in the way Washington does business that it stands virtually no chance unless beltway politicians know that the American republic is behind this change. For all but a few members of the House and the Senate, Job One is always to get reelected. They're not going to jeopardize their reelection chances by signing on to a piece of admittedly radical legislation without knowing in advance that their constituents are behind them.

"What we're saying, in other words, is that it's pretty much up to you."

"In Short, income taxes are siezed. Consumption taxes are paid. Which Way do you want it?"

GypsyPirate says:

I say it's about time. I just wish folks would get involved more in the process.

Loyalis says:

I'm a huge fan of the idea. Let's bring it on.

Don't Like It.

Mark says:

Yes I read the book. Four times. Sure it sounds great, it sounds like a magic wand. Who can be against all the great pomises it makes?

But Fairtax has fatal flaws, almost absurd lapses of logic, and simplistic thinking that is profoundly wrong.

For example, HR25 has no exemptions, none. No exceptions to the poor, the sick. How will the young parents of a child with leukemia pay a 100,000 in sales tax on the child's medical care?? And WHY ON EARTH should they? Other young parents with healthy child, or no child, could pay 2,000 in taxes? SO why would having a sick child somehow make it logical and Fair for them to have 50 times the federal tax liablity.?

Boortz and Linder never try to address that. Every. Not once, They did say on Hannity -- they are paying that now! Linder kept saying they are paying those taxes NOW.

NO they arent. They arent paying 50 times the federal taxes their neighbors pay, who make the same amount of income, and otherwise spend the same amount of money.

Im also against Fairtax because in the book Boortz tell you that you will keep your own paycheck. Boortz and Linder both have said people will have more money on their paycheck, cause they wont have with holding.

Later we found out - no. You don't get that money on your paycheck, In fact, wage earners get their gross pay deducted. Boortz admitted that later - and "clarified" the issue. Clarified? He did a 180. He says now your gross pay is "readjusted" downward. Where I come from, thats a cut in pay. And its certainly not what Boorz said earlier.

If you only read the book, you have little idea of the slick salesmanship. But the book is full of wishful thinking and sleights of hand.

Thane_Eichenauer says:

The Fair Tax proposes to shift taxes around, not reduce taxes one little bit (not even a little!). The Fair Tax proposal institutes welfare for all (prebates). Neither of these ideas is a net improvement. The federal government needs to reduce spending and we need to roll back taxes (and not replace them with a National Retail Sales Tax).

A Response

To Some Common Criticisms

Thane Eichenauer posted the comment above and I wanted to respond and explain why these common criticisms are inaccurate and invalid.

"The Fair Tax proposes to shift taxes around..." The only shifting of taxes by the FairTax is shifting it from taxing wealth to taxing consumption. A much more fair process. It doesn't modify the current tax system: it replaces it.
"...not reduce taxes one little bit (not even a little!)." The FairTax is not designed to reduce taxes. It is designed to fund the government at the current levels. It will reduce the tax burden most greatly for those with the lowest income levels and the middle class.
"The Fair Tax proposal institutes welfare for all (prebates)." The prebate untaxes all US citizens up to the level of purchasing the basic neccessities of life. ALL citizens; that's fair. And the prebate makes the FairTax progressive. The government should not have a claim to the first dollars spent in a household that go towards meeting the basic necessities for that houshold. Welfare is redistribution of wealth, ie siezing money from one group in order to give it to another.
"The federal government needs to reduce spending and we need to roll back taxes..." The FairTax is not meant to address either one of these areas. And this is plainly stated in all of the literature. Reducing government spending, as the authors say, is a different kettle of fish. Criticizing the FairTax for not reducing spending is like boycotting the Celtics for not beating the Patriots. It is just not a valid criticism.
Please read the books for better answers than I can give. I hope my explanations have helped to clarify some things. I appreciate the comments and welcome any more questions.

One thing that happens when we pass and implement the Fair Tax

You hear the unmistakable voice of that IRS agent who audited you three years ago asking if you'd like fries with that.

Hi bigjin, thanks for the input. My country it's portugal, i think this book can't apply here, since the things we can use to put on IRS, it's not the same. But the general "trick", yes, i think it's global.

JonitasKalimpo - Thanks for your comment. The FairTax concept is not specific to any one country. It could be implemented anywhere. I've heard the authors say that many other countries are coming to them for consultation on the concept. (Please take your time though. I don't want anyone to do it before we do!)

It's a pity that there isn't a book like this for my country

This is one of the best books around and is so easy to read an understand. I honestly do not understand why this plan has not been implemented yet. Thanks for making this great page.

The Most Important Thing

Find out for yourself. Don't expect politicians to change things on their own. We have to let them know we want it to change.
