A young celestial spirit wizard, Lucy Heartfilia, runs away from home and travels to the land of Fiore to join the magical Fairy Tail Guild. Along the way, she meets Natsu Dragneel, a teenage boy looking for his foster parent, a dragon named Igneel, with his best friend, Happy the cat. Shortly after their meeting, Lucy is abducted by Bora of Prominence, who was posing as Salamander of Fairy Tail, to be sold as a slave. Natsu rescues her and reveals that he is the real Salamander of Fairy Tail and has the skills of a Dragon Slayer [fire type], an ancient magic. He offers her membership into the guild, which she gladly accepts. They, along with armored maiden Erza Scarlet, ice maker Gray Fullbuster, and Happy, become a team performing various missions offered to the Fairy Tail guild.

Natsu Dragneel is the main male protagonist of Fairy Tail. He has a nickname Salamander. Natsu Dragneel is a Fire Dragon Slayer, a member of Fairy Tail, and the leader of Team Natsu. Natsu was found as a baby by Igneel, a powerful Fire Dragon whom Natsu called his "father". Igneel raised him and taught him how to talk, write, and use a form of Lost Magic known as Fire Dragon Slayer Magic. However, Igneel mysteriously disappeared. Aside from performing missions for his guild, Natsu travels with his partner Happy in search of Igneel. As a Dragon Slayer, specializes in a particular form of this magic called Fire Dragon Slayer magic, which gives him powers such as breathing fire, emitting flames from any part of his body to attack his opponent, being physically immune to fire, and ingesting any flame besides his own for nourishment.

Lucy Heartfilia is the main female protagonist of Fairy Tail, she is a Celestial Spirit Mage, a member of the Fairy Tail Guild and of its Team Natsu. As Celestial Wizard, Lucy specializes in summoning contracted celestial spirits from another realm using a set of keys called Gatekeys. Lucy is very kind to her Celestial Spirit, and refuses to use them as shields. She fights alongside them, and treats her spirits as people, while others treat them as tools and objects. Even though she is technically the owner of her spirits, she denies being called that and instead, calls herself their friend. She also carries a whip as her personal weapon, which she wields on occasion to fight alongside her spirits. Among the spirits she is contracted with, she currently possesses ten of the twelve keys that can open the Twelve Gates of the Zodiac.

Gray Fullbuster is one of the main male protagonists, he is a member of the Fairy Tail Guild and of Team Natsu. He has specializes to uses a form of magic called Ice Make, which allows him to instantaneously create ice and mold it into various kinds of weapons, shields, and other inanimate objects. He learned this magic from the wizard Ur, who took him in as an orphan after his hometown was destroyed by the demon Deliora. Gray originally intended to take revenge against Deliora, but moved on to join Fairy Tail after Ur sacrificed herself to defeat Deliora instead. While normally calm and collected, Gray has a fierce rivalry with Natsu due to their opposing magic types, which constantly leads the two to bicker and insult each other.

Erza Scarlet is one of the main female protagonist. She also known by the nickname "Fairy Queen, Titania". Erza Scarlet is an S-Class mage of Fairy Tail who is famous for her usage of requip magic. She is also a member of Team Natsu. S-Class wizard is a high-ranked wizard who is usually tasked with performing extremely dangerous missions, and the most powerful female member of the guild. She specializes in a form of magic called "the Knight", which allows her to immediately summon and equip different swords, armor, and clothing from hammerspace at will using a magic ability called "requipping". She has an artificial right eye made by Porlyusica (replacing the one she lost as a child) and grants her immunity from illusions and other magical effects that occur through eye contact.
