My Husband Never Gives Me Flowers
Do you love to get flowers for Valentine's Day, your birthday, or other special occasions? Are you excited when the florist delivers flowers to your office and you get to see the envious looks on your co-workers' faces?
That doesn't happen to me. I never get any flowers from my husband. I have never gotten any flowers from my husband, and we've been together for 14 years. Not very romantic, you might say. On the contrary, my husband has found a most creative way to tell me he loves me.
Shortly after we met, I commented that I had noticed he never bought me flowers. I wasn't really complaining, after all he was treating me like a Goddess in every other way. Still, I wanted to let him know that I would be open to getting flowers every now and then. And this is the story he told me.
However, just to be clear, I do like to get flowers now and then. This is a picture of the flowers my children sent me for Mother's Day, 2011. Aren't they beautiful?
How One Woman's Superstition Changed My Life
My husband met his first wife when he was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam conflict. He told me that the first time he bought her flowers, she burst into tears and said, "You give me flowers. You want me to die!"
I have to admit being really curious about this, so I did some more research. I learned that most people in Thailand are very superstitious and many of these beliefs center around death and ghosts. There are whole lists of things you should do or not do to avoid bringing bad luck. For instance, " Do not smell the flowers that you are going to offer to the monk. Something bad will happen to your nose." (from Superstitions from Thailand by Richard Barrow)
But what about romantic flowers? Can a man buy a Thai woman flowers? An article called "Dating and Romance Thai Style."warns a man wishing to date a Thai woman that many Thai girls feel that flowers are a waste of money. If a man does buy flowers, they should be white or red. "Yellow is in mourning so don't give her those as yellow blooms are for funerals."
I asked my husband if he had bought his first wife yellow flowers. His answer? "Probably."
Valentine's Day is now a big holiday in Thailand. According to an article on the website, Things Asian, Thailand is "madly in love with Valentine's Day" and roses are a very popular gift.
Because of the trauma of the whole incident, he found it very difficult to buy flowers for any woman after that. That put me in a dilemma. I like to get flowers, but had never been with a man that liked to give them. My first husband considered them extravagant. So my current husband came up with a beautiful idea; instead of flowers he gives me fairy figurines.
This is a good example of the Ripple Effect. We never know how much our actions affect others. In this instance, many years separate two events. Yet if I had my heart set on flowers, I might feel angry at someone I don't even know. Instead, we turned what might have become a source of contention between us, into something fun that we can share.

A New Tradition is Born
So began our tradition. On special occasions or for significant events, I get a new fairy. Sometimes I pick them out myself, and sometimes it is a surprise. I have several bookshelves full of colorful fairies. Many of them have particular meaning to me. For instance, there is the fairy that I received after having breast surgery. I have fairies commemorating anniversaries and birthdays.
I have a fairy riding on a squirrel and one riding a unicorn. I have a gnome riding on a goose, as well. I also have a wood nymph, a holly fairy, a sea fairy and an earth fairy. Some sit on mushrooms, some on flower petals. One sits on a park bench. There are even little baby fairies. Each is special in his or her own way, and each is a reminder of how much my husband loves me. For unlike flowers, they do not wilt and die, but provide me with pleasure and happiness each day.
I love watching the puzzlement on the faces of the sales clerks when my husband goes into a store and says, "I'm looking for flowers for my wife." We both know he means fairies, but they are clueless how to help him until we explain our tradition.
On Valentine's Day in 2009, I received two fairies from the Boyd's Fairiesprite Collection. See them in the above picture.
Surprise! I got another fairy in 2010, There she is in the picture below. She is now sitting on my desk at work.
Update Dec 2011 - We needed to pare down our possessions in preparation to become full-time RV-ers. So there won't be any new fairy figurines, at least for awhile. But hey, there are always fairy t-shirts!

"I have a feeling that childhood has been robbed of a great deal of its joys by taking away its belief in wonderful, mystic things, in fairies and all their kin. It is not surprising that when children are grown, they have so little idealism or imagination"

Own Your Own, Special Amy Brown Fairy
Through the years I have grown very fond of the subject matter that I paint. It is as real to me as life itself. Even now, as I sit here and write, the studio elves and faeries are cleaning my brushes and leaving fairy footprints all over my palette. Yes, faeries are as real as you and me, you only have to open your mind and use your imagination.

Show Your Love for Fairies with a T-Shirt
Update Mother's Day, 2012. Since my husband and I live in an RV and happened to be on the road this day, I decided to treat myself to a new fiary t-shirt. The one I bought is the "Her Secret Fairy T-shirt" featured first in the list.
"Once upon a time, I thought faeries lived only in books, old folktales, and the past. That was before they burst upon my life as vibrant, luminous beings, permeating my art and my everyday existence, causing glorious havoc."

- Fairies, though not flowers, are certainly better than nothing, and the ones you've collected so far are beautiful. Sigh...my boyfriend isn't really the gift giving type at all. Maybe I should drop him a hint!

- Hi! I like this lens a lot. I saw some fairy figurines in Nashville that were painted, and some that weren't. The plain ones were really affordable. I make ceramic Fairy Doors, which are somewhat related! What a fun lens. Thank you for making it!

- Personally, I think it is even more romantic that your husband seeks out a gift that is so very special to you. I enjoy receiving flowers myself, but I will readily admit, I prefer them to be potted or blooming bulbs. I actually hate to see cut flowers because I know we are ending the flowers life and that they have actually from cut from their stem of life. We all have our personal preferences and I think it is awesome that you two have found a more personal and private way to express your love for one another. You expressed yours by understanding your husband and finding an alternative that you both can enjoy. Most excellent!

GrannySage Loves Fairies
As you can see, I love collecting fairies. They are beautiful to look at. Plus, they represent my connection to fairyland, which started when my mother read the Wizard of Oz books to me as a child.
I wanted to share this little tradition because I think traditions are important. Sometimes in the case of divorce or a death, old traditions pass away. But we can always create new traditions that have special meaning to the people creating them. That is the case with Fairies, Not Flowers.
Update Dec 2011. It is hard to believe, but I gave away all my fairies. My husband and I are living full-time in an RV. I found several fairy lovers who were happy to adopt them, and they seemed to have made the transition well. I will have their pictures and this lens to remind me of their loveliness.
