Creating whimsical fairy houses in the woods is somewhat of a tradition in the Northeast, especially Maine and Vermont. Using tree stumps, mosses, twigs, acorns and other natural materials, children (and adults, too) fashion little dwellings, hoping the fairies will appreciate and use their gift to them. Learn a bit about these fairy houses and more as you explore this lens about fairies.

Make a Fairy House

Here are some suggestions for natural materials to use in making your fairy house. I'm sure you can think of many more things to use.
  • an old hollow tree: the bones of a house
  • acorn caps: dishes, finials & handles
  • milkweed fluff: pillows & beds
  • feathers: beds and decoration
  • empty walnut shells: sinks & bowls
  • Reeds and grasses: weave mats, rugs & blankets
  • mosses: cushions, chairs & footstools

Furniture For Your Fairy House

Why not also add furniture to your fairy house? Here are some sources and some ideas for you.
Fairy House Twig Furniture at Twig Wizardry
"Twig Wizardry" makes tiny, delightful, fairy-sized furniture from willow branches. This link takes you directly to the page which shows examples of their tiny furniture creations. They also offer custom fairy houses which are lighted from the inside and designed to be displayed indoors. You may find it interesting to read their information on fairies and fairy houses.
"Fairy Woodland" Furniture
Have fun with some fairy-sized furniture from Fairy Woodland. I'd even like to have some human-sized furniture from them, but they specialize in miniatures and they are very cute.

Although I have never had the priviledge of actually seeing one of the faerie folk, I have absolutely experienced the wonderful intensity of a pixie's laughter. There's nothing like it in the human realm! I would love to hear your stories, or see your pictures. Please e-mail me at moonfaerie.avalon@gmail.co.za

Though I am still a Northwesterner at heart, I now live in beautiful, historic, semi-rural New England. Not far from Boston, I am able to partake of big city life, as well. I do love the Northeast, but very much miss the Northwest--its just a much different way of life. I moved here for love, so I am staying.

I earned a Master's degree in art with a concentration in drawing and have taught art at the university and college level as well as to young children and seniors. My teaching style is one which focuses on guidance and support as well as perfection of technique. One of my passions is helping people see things in new ways.

After noticing a huge need, I also spent many years raising money as a professional, for both the arts and for higher education. Since moving to New England I have enjoyed sharing my creativity with others as a high-end floral designer.
