Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm - Storytellers
Jakob Karl Grimm was born on January 4, 1785, in Hanau, Germany. His brother, Wilhelm Karl Grimm, was born on February 24 of the following year. They were the oldest surviving sons of Philipp Grimm, a lawyer who served as Hanau's town clerk. As small children they spent most of their time together; aside from a brief period of living apart, they were to remain together for the rest of their lives.
Their even-tempered personalities made it easy for them to work together on projects. The main difference in their personalities seems to have been that Jakob Grimm, the healthier of the two, had more taste for research work, and it was he who worked out most of their theories of language and grammar. Wilhelm Grimm was physically weaker but was a somewhat warmer person and more interested in music and literature. He was responsible for the pleasant style of their collection of fairytales.

The Brothers Grimm Part of the Romantic Movement
The romantic movement in Germany (a movement in the arts that favored a return to nature and a greater focus on national culture, especially folk tales) awakened the Germans' interest in the past of their own country. Although some work in the rediscovery and editing of medieval (from the Middle Ages, 500-1500) German literature had already been started in the eighteenth century, it was the poets and theorists of the next century who first focused national attention on the origins of German culture and literature.
While most of the poets viewed medieval literature mainly as an inspiration for new writing, others turned their attention to the investigation of the past. The Grimm brothers were the most important of these early language and folklore romantic historians.

The Brothers Grimm Collected Folklore and Legends
For some years the brothers had been in contact with the romantic poets Clemens Brentano (1778-1842) and Achim von Arnim (1781-1831), who were preparing a collection of German folk songs. Following their own interests in folklore and legends, the brothers brought out their first collection of tales, Kinder-und Hausmärchen (Tales of Children and the Home), in 1812.
These tales were collected by recording stories told by peasants and villagers. Wilhelm put them into written form and gave them a pleasant, childlike style. The collection became known as "Grimm's Fairy Tales," including what are now some of the world's most famous stories, including Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin.

Other Work by the Grimms
In later years their interest in older literature led the Grimm brothers to a study of older languages and their relationship to modern German. Jakob especially began to specialize in the history and structure of the German language. The first edition of his Deutsche Grammatik (German Grammar) was published in 1819.
The brothers, especially Jakob, were also working to document the relationship between similar words of related languages, such as the English apple and the German Apfel. Their creation of the rules for such relationships became known as "Grimm's law." It was later expanded to account for all word relationships in the Indo-European group of languages. The Grimm brothers were not the first to take note of such similarities, but they can be credited with gathering the bulk of linguistic data and working out the details of the rules.

One of the most exquisite picture books of the season, Zelinsky's Rumplestiltskin will have strong appeal for children and for adult picture-book collectors alike. The artist has illustrated numerous award-winners, including Hansel and Gretel (a Caldecott Honor Book) and The Story of Mrs. Lovewright and Purrless Her Cat (a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year). Here Zelinsky has retold the narrative himself; he has captured the magic and frightening wonder of the tale while incorporating elements from a number of 19th century Grimm versions. The spare story flows beautifully, and the illustrations are extraordinary. Incredibly detailed full-color paintings show the influence of careful study of styles and techniques of European portrait and landscape painters. In Hansel and Gretel, the tale's dark side was communicated principally through Zelinsky's depiction of a powerful and frightening background. But here the interior scenesheaps and heaps of straw, and baskets of empty spindles, with rooms suddenly full of golden threadcarry the story. The little man Rumplestiltskin is by turns mysterious, comforting, devious, furious and pathetic. And Zelinsky shows dramatically the love that the miller's daughter has for her child, and the terror she feels when she realizes she may have to give him up. Rumplestiltskin is a tour de force by an immensely talented artist. Zelinsky is that rare practitioner who can create sophisticated work that adults will marvel at, and that children will joyfully embrace.

The Brothers Grimm--From 1840 Until Their Deaths
From 1840 until their deaths, both brothers continued to work vigorously. After years of collecting and collating, Jacob began to publish his legal tradition project, which had been undertaken with the assistance of volunteers from all parts of the Germanies.
His history of the German language appeared in 1848, and in 1854 reissues of Jacob's legal tradition, mythology, and history of the German language appeared. Wilhelm continued to edit and publish medieval literature and to edit and to refine the Children's and Household Tales.
Wilhelm Grimm died on December 16, 1859 and Jacob Grimm on September 20, 1863.

"Alas," answered the girl, "I have to spin straw into gold, and I do not know how to do it."
The Grimm Brothers Set Literary Principles
The principles set out by the Grimms strongly affected the development of folklore studies. They urged fidelity to the spoken text, without embellishments, and though it has been shown that they did not always practise what they preached, the idealized 'orality' of their style was much closer to reality than the literary retellings previously thought necessary.
They believed folklore expressed the true spiritual and moral values of a nation, faithfully preserved by the uneducated rural population, and that it consisted largely of brokendown fragments of ancient myths and religious beliefs. Noticing that the same tale recurs in variants from distant periods and places, they argued that this implies descent from a shared prehistoric culture.

- I love them...I've got a huge, thick copy of Grimm's Collected Fairytales and I still read them! I love them because they're not "sanitised" and they explore the darker side of life and that's great, because to me, these tales teach children that the world isn't necessarily a nice place filled with nice people and that's far more useful than anthropomorphic animals and bright colours :)

- I'm a fan of fairy tales, Mother Goose, and fables. These, often scary stories, allow our children to deal with their fears in the safety of a story, read alongside mother's knee.
