Faith and Worship:Section B

Ranked #1,383 in Culture & Society, #33,600 overall

Welcome to Section B of Faith and Worship

Because of the rules of this site I am not able to give information for the whole of Faith and Worship on one page and so I will be splitting my material into four pages. This should present no difficulties to the reader. I aim to give more and more material to help you as you work your way through Faith and Worship, the teaching course for becoming a local preacher with the Methodist church in Britain.

Section B

Of Faith and Worship

A Bigger Section

Having passed Section A you will now find that Section B has four units. You will therefore have to allocate more time to completing this section. It is always advisable to plan the time you can give to your studies. If you are a busy person even a half hour that you can set aside will help in the overall journey. Perhaps part of a dinner hour can be set aside and because this is a different activity from your work it will probably be quite refreshing. If you do not plan for study the weeks can slip away with nothing achieved. Set yourself goals. They will help even if you cannot always keep to them.

The Origins of Christian Worship

General Remarks on Tackling an Assignment

When starting out on an assignment of Faith and Worship look at the mark scheme and see where the most marks are and concentrate most of your effort on these. Make sure you are really answering the question and not veering off at a tangent onto something else that takes your attention. Always check the remarks in the tutor's handbook, available in pdf form from the Methodist website. There are remarks for each question in an assignment giving guidelines for how many words are needed and extra tips for what is expected on other matters. You are supposed to have access to this, in fact tutors are advised in it to make photocopies of the remarks on questions for their students. Make sure you fully understand what is meant by Knowledge, Understanding, Evaluation and Application. Evaluation was a stumbling block for me as I had been out of education for a long time. Basically with evaluation you pull the subject apart and look at it from all angles, say why something is a good idea and works and also what might not be a good idea and why it won't work. It is to show that you have really looked at all sides of a question. When starting out on an assignment it also definitely helps to PRAY.

Are You Having Trouble with Faith and Worship?

Most of us are sure about our call to preach, but we can also feel not called to study Faith and Worship! Well you can't have one without the other in the Methodist church. One of our problems is, that although we seek God's help in prayer when we are preparing our services and particularly our sermons, we forget that God has all the anwers to our problems with Faith and Worship. Remember he does know what is required in the assignments and he will help us, if we ask and will inspire us to write what is required, but in our own individual style. I remember as a music student I once caught myself out thinking that God didn't actually know much about music. It was a great relief to realise how stupid that was of me and that God could help me with harmony exercises.
Faith and Worship is there to broaden your knowledge and encourage you to deepen your spiritual life. That can''t be bad, can it? I found it hard work both mentally and emotionally, but it is good to be stretched. I suppose it comes down to "No pain, no gain" Many of you find it difficult to find the time to put into studying. I would suggest that when time is difficult prepare a sermon based on the work you are studying. This will possibly not be using the lectionary, but that is all to the good as you can use it more than once if you are moving around the circuit. Make it a really good sermon and it will stand up to being repeated. Expect difficulties on the way with Faith and Worship, but keep plodding on and working through them. You will come through at last.

The Other Sections

Eventually Links for Faith and Worship will be on four separate pages. This is to do with problems caused by too many links on one page. We need a lot of links to be helpful. I will also be adding more of my own outlook on each section as it is better to have a balanced ratio of new content and links. I hope I will be able to add lots of useful observations. At present sections A,C and D are together and can be found on the link below.

Unit 10 of Faith and Worship

The Holy Spirit

An Overwhelming Number of References on the Spirit

In Unit 10 you will find a huge number of references which you need to look up. While it is beneficial to explore your Bible in this way, I know that many of you have very busy lives and would be grateful for some shortcuts. So I am here trying to give you most of the references ready to hand. I began by using links to various online Bibles, but found I had soon used up the permitted number of links from each site. Then I resorted to copying and pasting. I hope you will find this a useful resource which cuts down the time needed to find each reference and so gives you more time for your assignment. I would be grateful if you would make a comment in the guestbook so that I can assess how useful this page is. I would also value any suggestions for improving the page.

1 Kings 22:6 Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred men, and said to them, "Shall I go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?" And they said, "Go up, for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king."

Jeremiah 23:11 "Both prophet and priest are ungodly; even in my house I have found their evil, declares the LORD.

2 Chronicles 24:20 Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, "Thus says God, 'Why do you break the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.'"

Nehemiah 9:30 Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

Jeremiah 14:13 -18 Then I said: "Ah, Lord GOD, behold, the prophets say to them, 'You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.'"
And the LORD said to me: "The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.
Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not send them, and who say, 'Sword and famine shall not come upon this land': By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed.
And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them--them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.
"You shall say to them this word: 'Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease, for the virgin daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound, with a very grievous blow.

Micah 2:11 If a man should go about and utter wind and lies, saying, "I will preach to you of wine and strong drink," he would be the preacher for this people!

The Spirit at Work

Verses on page 16 Unit 10

1 Samuel 16:14 -23 Now the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him.
And Saul's servants said to him, "Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you.

Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well."

So Saul said to his servants, "Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me."
One of the young men answered, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the LORD is with him."

Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep."
And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul.
And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer.
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight."

And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.

Judges 14:6 Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

Judges 15: 14 -15 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him. Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands.
And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, and put out his hand and took it, and with it he struck 1,000 men.

Page 17

2 Kings 19: 35-36 And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.
Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh.

Deuteronomy 18: 20-22 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or [fn] who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.'
And if you say in your heart, 'How may we know the word that the LORD has not spoken?'--
when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

Deuteronomy 13:1-5 "If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder,
and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, 'Let us go after other gods,' which you have not known, 'and let us serve them,'
you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the LORD your God is testing you, to know whether you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.
But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil [fn] from your midst.

Verses from Page 18 and 19 The Spirit

Micah 3:5 Thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry "Peace" when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths.

Psalm 51:11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me.

Isaiah 63:10 But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit; therefore he turned to be their enemy, and himself fought against them.

Isaiah 32:15 until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.

Isaiah 44: 1-5 "But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen!
Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen.
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.
They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams.
This one will say, 'I am the LORD's,' another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, 'The LORD's,' and name himself by the name of Israel."

Isaiah 11: 1-10 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist, and faithfulness the belt of his loins.
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder's den.
They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
In that day the root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for the peoples--of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

Isaiah 42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.

Isaiah 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;

Jeremiah 31:31-34 "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the LORD.
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more."

Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

Numbers 11:29 But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!"
