There are plenty to choose from, and you can find them everywhere from your farmer's market in the city, the supermarket, or your local roadside stand (the best option usually!). Here is a quick list of some of the most popular fall harvest fruits and vegetables.

Butternut Squash 

One of the best vegetables to buy in the fall months

There are a million recipes you can find for butternut squash. The bell-shaped "winter squash" is best served cooked with cinnamon, nutmeg, curry or cumin. It's also a great source of vitamin A and fiber. Try and find ones that are dry and dull, not shiny, with the stems intact, no cracks and are quite heavy for their size.

Pears 

Perfect as a dessert in the autumn months

These fruits are actually quite popular all year, but you'll find extra varieties and an abundance of pears in the autumn months. With plenty of fiber (5 grams on the average) and a good source of Vitamin C and Potassium, the sweetness of pears can be an excellent treat.

Usually, pears need to be slightly ripened after purchase. Avoid bruises or extra hard ones, and try to look for unblemished and slightly green pears.

Pomegranate has been the latest health craze, or marketing craze, depending on how you look at it. It has huge amounts of antioxidants, which are all the rage right now in reducing risks of certain cancer types. Find it in juice form or by purchasing the whole fruit.

You may be surpised if you haven't seen one before, but you have to cut the fruit open and eat the seeds...which are just about the most delicious fruit out there. It may take some work to get the seeds out, but the taste is well worth it. Or just have a glass of the juice!

Sweet Potatoes 

Healthy, sweet and delicious for any fall dinner

These aren't yams, contrary to popular belief. These are better for you. Sweet potatoes have over 300% of your daily Vitamin A intake, and only about 125 calories.

Look for dry, dark, smooth sweet potatoes, avoiding wetness and bruising. These are great cooked whole or cooked and peeled with butter. Some people even add marshmallow or butter and cinnamon, but the taste is great alone.
