We just returned from a vacation in Maine last Sunday...a little early for the changing of the leaves, but we do love New England so much and travel up there often. Thankfully we are surrounded by State and Open Space forested land here in our little cabin in NJ. Beautiful lens:-)

Someday I would love to see the fall foliage in New England! I've always lived in the Southwest, where the trees don't change too much.

I dabble in photography so I love to plan a fall trip to a place with excellent fall foliage. Thanks for sharing the info on this area. I usually head west but maybe this year I should go east.

Excellent job! I just featured this on the ExSquidition Travel Journal today. I head to Killington every year, and I'll probably be making it back this October.

Thanks to you all that have left comments about the lens. I'm glad it is still being useful to people each year.

As regards fcakebda question about scenic trains - here's my best answer to it:

There are a number of opportunities for short train rides throughout New England during the fall. Here are the ones I know about:

    http://www.berkshirescenicrailroad.org/

    http://www.essexsteamtrain.com/

    http://www.rails-vt.com/

    http://www.hoborr.com/

    http://www.conwayscenic.com/

There's probably more. Of course getting to these locations to catch the train if you don't have a car is problematic as none of these trains leave from Boston.
  • fcakebda Sep 11, 2009 @ 5:46 am | delete
I've looked and looked the net for information on short train trips to view the changing foliage. Not found much. We will be in Boston from October 6th through the 11th. We'll be seeing Boston mostly and will not have a car. We'd like to take a train through the mountains for one day. If you can give any info on that, I'd appreciate it. I can be reached at fcalenda@aol.com Thanks

  • jazzdog May 3, 2009 @ 7:44 pm | in reply to marc | delete
    Hi Marc,

In answering your question you first need to explain what you mean by "best." If best means peak foliage then it varies from area to area and from year to year in those areas by as much as 2 weeks. That is why one of the modules in this lens gives you peak viewing time over the last two years. Peak foliage viewing unfortunately can't be scheduled like July 4th. Peak foliage is also a point in time and the colors are gorgeous two weeks before and two weeks after.

If you want a general date for best viewing - and that is your definition of "best" - then most people would advocate Columbus Day weekend as being prime time for viewing, This is always the second Monday in October and this year is October 12th. You may have to drive around the region to find best views of foliage but around mid-October you should get great colors for photography.

Anytime after first week of October will be great for photography colors. Hope this helps.

I read your great blog...but WHAT ARE THE BEST DATES to come and do photography? I could not find them anywhere? marcmpc@aol.com

Your lens is beautifully done and makes me want to return although I have never been in New England to see the fall foilage I have been in the White Mountains in the summer. If you are travelling there to see the leaves, you might want to visit Polly's Pancake Parlor. I am lensrolling your beautiful travel lens to my lens about Polly's.

Awesome lens! And now I'm homesick. I'm a Rhode Islander now living in Flagstaff, Arizona. We do have fall colors out here at 7,000, but not anywhere near the variety. There's just nothing like Autumn in New England. Thank you for doing it justice here.

Thank you Nicole for noticing the broken link on the autumn train rides. I've corrected it. This is what happens when you link to something at About.com and they change the page - dumb thing to do unless you want to lose traffic to your web site.

There is a new group being formed in Squidooville. It's called A Walk in the Woods. Because you have done such a nice job with your Fall Foliage lens Whitefoot the Wood Mouse is inviting you to join him in this new venture. The exposure that your lens gets by joining will boost your lens rank and add to the number of web pages linking to your lens. Come take A Walk in the Woods.

    Hi Vic,

You're right about no photos are substitute for being there. And Maine - especially the interior woods and mountain areas - is a beautiful destination for seeing the fall foliage. Hope you get back there soon, and find this lens useful when it comes time to plan.

Very nicely done. I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of weeks in late Oct. about 10 years ago in Maine and as Beautiful as the pictures you have here are they can't compare with being there. I know that I'll be using this resource to plan a trip back soon. 5 Stars

Cliff, this is an incredible lens! I wish I were able to give it 6 stars. Please consider submitting this to the lens of the day competition when the leaves start changing.
I love your top 10 things to do list, too.

Great lens. A 5 to you! I stopped by as you requested a review, however I cannot recommend much but perhaps a RSS feed on 'New England Fall Foliage.' Consider stopping by and checking out a new lens of mine, Cool Desert Nights. :o)

What a great lens! I live in Maine and just love the fall foliage... esp along the Bar Harbor area. You did a great job creating this lens. Good info, great pics, and themed extras. Keep up the good work!
