It may sound odd but I could actually imagine this being a good gift to make for my 21 (well going on 22 next) year old son. He loves to cook and he's moving away this autumn so I think he'd love a personalised cookbook with all of Mummy's recipes!!! Nice lens!!

I wish that I'd managed to make a cookbook. I still have all my recipes on bits of paper.

What beautiful ideas to create your own family cookbook. It would be a priceless treasure that can go for generations to come. This would be a nice family tradition to start
  • dlcass Apr 18, 2012 @ 12:27 pm | delete
I love this idea! I collect cookbooks, and my most prized ones belonged to my Great Grandmother. One is a new bride's book that included recipes, household tips and how to manage servants. Servants? I wish. I created some family recipe binders on Zazzle. If you want to see them, check out my Family Recipe Binder lens. Great lens Joan.

I think one of the most important things a family can do together is to make a family cookbook. I wish we would have thought of this before because there are several contributors we are going to always wish we had included but it is too late.

When we are thinking about this kind of thing it is usually too late... I hope our family will finish this project soon and we can pass this down to the next generation (hopefully they will continue to add to it).

Your guide to making a family cookbook is fabulous! More people should do this and your guide to how to make a family (or family and friends) cookbook is easy and a great idea.

The lady's club in town has put together a cook book a couple of times and used it to raise money for their projects. The most recent publication sold out quick and funded an update on the club house kitchen.

I loved including family memories in my cookbooks that I made for my daughters. I asked the grandparents to tell me about the food they had for holidays when they were little, what they had for birthdays, and their favorite food. It is so nice to have this memories for posterity.

  • Centavo Apr 1, 2012 @ 1:51 pm | delete
We are working on one for our Bunco group. We would then like to market it and raise money for charity here in Mexico--give more education opportunities. Thanks for your ideas.

I love the idea of making your own family cookbook. I started trying to gather some recipes from my Mother by asking her if she remembered any recipes from my grandmother (passed on years ago). I had a difficult time trying to collect the recipes and give up. Thanks for writing this lens.

  • mumsgather Jan 17, 2012 @ 12:31 am | delete
Thats a lovely idea. That way our family food can be carried forward to the next generation. My mum passed away when I was 10. She was a great cook. Unfortunately, I don't know how to cook any of the wonderful meals she makes. Though certain kitchen smells always remind me of her. A family cook book is a very good idea indeed.

Really great idea here. So many recipes lost each time one of our elders is lost due to not simply writing them down.
  • oxfordian Jan 7, 2012 @ 3:23 pm | delete
What a great idea! I have a few "secret" recipes that I've shared only with very few in my family and it would be a lovely legacy to bind them up with my family's favorites. I made a photo/scrap book going back 4 generations, now it's time to do a recipe book. Thank you for your guidance and wonderful advice. Here's an angel blessing!
  • sherridan Jan 6, 2012 @ 10:09 am | delete
Wow - well done to your sister. We shove recipes we like into a jar, but as yet, that is where they have remained! I once watched a funny episode of 'Everybody loves Raymond' where paternal granny Marie reluctantly gives some recipes to her daughter in law, but sneakily keeps the best to herself to maintain some superiority or power!
  • kathysart Jan 3, 2012 @ 8:34 am | delete
I made one about 15 yeas ago but it is time for another I think. Thanks for the reminder! Thumbs up and blessed.

Hi Joan! What a great idea. I'm actually inspired to get off my duff and do this for my family recipes (since I'm the one that does most of the cooking these days) so the kids and grandchildren have them. Thanks for a wonderful lens and Happy Holidays! ~ David
  • catwell2 Nov 23, 2011 @ 2:59 am | delete
Great lens! About 10 years ago my mom and I made cookbooks for the whole family. We mailed everyone recipe cards and had them mail them back with whatever recipes they wanted to include and then we typed them up and printed a bunch for everyone. Now we all have recipes to add and will have to make a new one. You have some great tips here that we didn't include and I'm eager to share them with my mom. Thanks!

This is such a sweet lens. My mom made me a family cookbook for my wedding gift in the form of a big scrapbook but more durable for the kitchen. It has pictures of each family member and their recipe that they contributed. It really meant a lot and I use it regularly!!

  • ronpass Aug 10, 2011 @ 10:54 pm | delete
Congrats Joan on the Purple Star - well earned. You may even have motivated me to work on a family cookbook - collating all those favoured recipes currently on loose bits of paper. The project sounds exciting, even taking photos of prepared food before it gets demolished by the hungry hordes (a risky business!).
  • charlino Aug 10, 2011 @ 5:53 pm | delete
Heirloom recipes are meant to be both treasured and shared. This is a wonderful resource for making family cook books. Congrats on your well deserved Purple Star.
  • sittonbull Aug 10, 2011 @ 4:17 pm | delete
Kudos to the purple star committee for awarding another quality lens. The intro tweaked some good memories for me for sure & loved seeing Mary Jim in there. She used to call me up and invite me to lunch... which as you know was scrumptious... and then as I was going back for seconds declare in the dialect that was truly her own, "Don't hurt yoself with all that food!" Miss those days! LOL
  • BarbRad Aug 10, 2011 @ 2:32 pm | delete
The only one we have is my special scrapbook of my own favorite recipes. We don't really have anyone to pass such a book to unless my nephews get married. My mom once started such books for my sil and me, but they never got very far. I've already passed the best recipes to my sil. But I think every family with children or a large extended family should have one. Congrats on your purple star.
  • ArtByLinda Aug 10, 2011 @ 2:15 pm | delete

I think I will take making a family cookbook into consideration because of your lens. This year in college, I do not have a meal plan so I will be cooking for myself most of the semester. However, I am still learning a few dishes over this summer before I start in the fall. Now I am just going to write down the steps and ingredients to save myself the time of having to remember it all. Thank you a lot and nice lens!

I created a family cookbook from my mother-in-law's collection of recipes after she passed away. All the women and girls in the family now have a copy. Thankfully, I didn't have to do it on a typewriter, though I did that years ago for a Girl Scout troop. Great lens!

I have two family cookbooks. One I made with my Grandmother who passed away 15 years ago. I cherish this book and treat it with much reverence and care. Opening it reminds me of my grandmother and the wonderful cooking adventures we had together.

My second book was created with my Mom. It is filled with over a hundred family recipes and it too is cherished. It is used almost every day.
  • AbsoluteJeanius May 7, 2011 @ 2:16 pm | delete
I do, but it is not complete. I do not have any of my grandmother's recipes. For anyone reading this, I'd urge them to DO IT DO IT DO IT NOW. Even if you don't think you will want the recipe, you are saving it for future family members - and remember that tastes change. I'd kill for my grandma's dressing recipe, something I didn't eat as a child...

I'm making a family cook book for a school project. I'm not 100% on what to do yet but im sure it will all work out. I am going to collect family recipes from everyone and bung them all together and design a front cover.

I'm trying to talk my husband into this. He's the "real" cook in the family. No luck so far, but I'll get my way eventually.
    Thanks for sharing,

This is something I'd enjoy doing if I had anyone to pass it to. My own children are both gone and my brother has two unmarried sons. My cousins do have children and grandchildren, but I hardly know them. If people ask for recipes now, I make a lens and send them a link :)

I love this idea and in fact I've actually created two cookbooks...one just for my children in 1992 that was so popular I had to print up more for other relatives. The second one was a collaboration with my sister-in-law. We had it printed and just charged the family enough to pay for the printing...turned out to be just a few dollars each. Both cookbooks were a huge hit.

Terrific job on this lens, Joan. The family cookbook is a subject near and dear to me. It's so wonderful to preserve the family cooking tradition.

Here's a web site that makes it easy to collect your family recipes. And you can create a group just for your family, family members can join the group and collaborate with you on your family recipe collection from anywhere in the world. A great way to share.

What a great family memory - our family is small and spread out accross the country and so it's not something that I have ever considered. But, I think it makes for a wonderful gift at Christmas time, for weddings or for birthdays.

Fantastic lens ..... love the tip about including personal notes with the various recipes. When I was in my late 20's, my best friend's Mom passed away suddenly of a heart attack. Her Mom was a great cook and she never got the chance to pass on many of the family favorites to her kids (including my friend). It was that lesson in life that got me up off my butt to make our family's recipe book. I got my Mom's tattered recipe box and all her dog-eared cookbooks from her. Then I typed up all the recipes and had the book printed. I gave all my brothers and sisters and even my Mom a copy for xmas. She was happy that she had all of her recipes in one easy to find place. And after going through the mess she called a recipe box, I know why:) I still use that book 15 years later.

    Hi Joan,

Great article with lots of good information! Thanks so much for including my book and a link to Amazon. My website at http://www.recipeforacookbook.com offers information about writing and publishing cookbooks, including a list of cookbook-specific printers. My blog at http://cookbookcuisine.blogspot.com talks about cookbook writing. Would it be okay if I blogged about your article and included a link?

    Thanks,

Thank you all for your comments! and KK, you come on anytime, the latch string's out and the dog's tied up, lol, but I am a country cook -- nothing fancy and lots of cans and microwave stuff! My sisters are the good cooks and my mama was a super cook! My daughter, thankfully, takes after the 3 of them! She's a great cook! maybe she will feed us for your visit! lol

I am definitely not a cook, so I appreciate those who are!

Someday I'm gonna visit you Moon, and take a taste of that wonderful cuisine!

    Great lens! Thanks Moon!

Joan, I love the idea. Especially put in the "secret" family recipes!!! I can remember some of my grandmother's cooking, and I can almost make it taste the same. Of course back then (I am now 53), she used a "pinch of this, a pinch of that, a hand full of, etc. But I'm going to do it!!!!
    Thanks for the idea!

My husband's grandmother was the State Winner in Montana in the cooking contest sponsered by the gas stove company in the early 30's. I have her cookbooks, lucky me, and I've got the one with all of the state winner's recipes in it. However, even more precious than that, I have the cookbook she got the original recipe from with all her little margin notes showing the various ways she tweaked it. Haven't actually put together a family cookbook, but it's on my list of things to do.

Another great lens, by the way! KUDOS!

Oh, yessss!! I have created a collection of "My Favorite Recipes"..."scrapbook-style"...with a photo of the family member or friend who has hand-written the recipe. Then I added my comments about the memories I associate with the person and his/her recipe on each page.

We don't have a Family Cookbook, although my Mum and Grandma were devils with Rice Pudding. My daughter is a whiz in the kitchen and I'm sure she would love to see this.. I will share with her... she has her own recipe site at Rhiannons Recipes and I'm sure sure blog about this lens!

Thank you Joan for another great idea.
