Family & Group Halloween Costume Ideas

A great way to get everyone in your family in the Halloween spirit is to create a group of costumes with a united theme. So once you get your family members to agree that they will jump in with both feet, the hard part will be choosing a fun set of costumes that reflects your group's personality and style. If dressing up together is a Halloween tradition in your family, it can get difficult to come up with new and exciting ideas so it is my hope that you will find some of the costume ideas, make-up and costume making tips, as well as links to costume stores useful.

Group family costumes are a great idea for neighborhood and church Halloween parties. Often times Mom & Dad can use their costumes as a couple's costume set if they are invited to an adult Halloween party too. And of course, the kids can wear theirs for trick-or-treating.

My favorite family costumes from Halloween parties that I have attended in the past were a family of Smurfs and a Shrek family. Both sets of costume were made by hand (with the exception of the Fiona dress and Shrek mask). Unfortunately, I couldn't find digital photos of these particular costumes, but if you check out the Flickr photo section below, there are some similar examples. My creative sister-in-law made up the Smurf costumes by buying cheap white pants, blue sweatshirts and making little white hats for everyone in the family including the baby. They all had their faces painted blue and it was simply adorable.

The Caped Crusader Family of Heros

Batman is a fictional comic book hero who was introduced to the public in 1940 by DC Comics. He fights crime in Gotham City along with his trusty sidekick Robin. Batman has also occasionally teamed up with Batgirl to fight crime over the years. Batman has always been a popular superhero, but the series of Batman movies produced in the 1990 and 2000's have increased the status of the superhero even more.

It is no wonder than that Batman costumes are available for all genders and sizes. There is even a Batman costume for dogs on the market today.

And for tips on how to make your own Batman costumes, visit WikiHow or Family Crafts or FamilyGo.

Family of Firefighters

Firefighters come to the rescue in many real life situations from fighting fire to rescuing cats stranded in trees. Kids from coast to coast proclaim that they want to be a fireman when they grow up so it isn't all that surprising that kids like dressing up like firefighters on Halloween. Why not carry that through to the family pet as well as Mom & Dad? There are a wide range of firefighter Halloween costumes available both online and in local party supply shops.

Aaaargh! There's A Family of Pirates on the Loose

Pirates have ruled the high seas for millenia and with the release of the Pirates of the Carribbean movie series, pirate costumes have never been more popular. At online shops, you can find costumes for every member of the family from Dad to baby. And the great thing about this theme is that it won't take much arm twisting to get your tweeners and even Dad to agree to dressing up like a pirate. Cartoons and movies have created a fictional pirate icon that translates well into a fun Halloween costume because you can accessorize with things like peg legs, hooks, eye patches, parrots, skulls and bones and more. You can even make your own pirate's costumes pretty easily using thrift store items.

An Entire Family of Teletubbies Attack

Personally I wouldn't be caught dead in a teletubbies costume, but if you have preschool aged kids, chances are that they love the teletubbies. If you can get Dad and the older kids to get on board with this costume idea, I'm sure that your younger kids would be thrilled with the choice.

Star Wars Costumes

There's even a Yoda dog!

George Lucas created the Star Wars series back in the 1970's and the movies are some of the highest grossing films ever. With the release of the prequel trilogy to the sequel trilogy in the late 90's, Star Wars has become a staple in the popular culture of today. And since there was a 22 year gap between the original and prequel series, the ages of Star Wars followers cover a wide range making it easy to get adults and kids of all ages excited about a Star Wars themed group of costumes. The other great thing is that because there were 6 movies, there are plenty of fun characters to choose from. You can find many costume Halloween stores that sell Star Wars paraphernalia online - they even have Yoda dog costumes that are super cute!

The Disney 2007 family costume contest showcased this creative family of Star Wars fanatics (see the photo to the left). They said they did all these costumes for under $20 and it was super easy. Check out the step by step instructions at FamilyGo.

This Family Bites! Vampires

Mythological vampires who live by sucking the blood from their victims have been immortilized in countless movie films and cartoons. The common attributes of legendary vampires make them a great costume choice - pale purplish complexions, fangs for teeth and bloody mouths. Just watching movies like Brahm Stoker's Dracula and Interview with a Vampire will give you countless costume ideas. Since vampire Halloween costumes can be a bit scary, I do not recommend this theme for very young children. However if you have tweeners, I have no doubt that they'll love this theme.

Creating realistic looking vampire make-up requires some skill so be sure to watch the Youtube video below for some tips.

Making your own vampire costumes is relatively easy as well. For a 'Lil Vampire, visit this family site. For a vampire princess, try these instructions.

How To Apply Vampire Make-Up

Vampire Makeup for Halloween

Watch in high quality for more realistic colors. An extreme look for Halloween, if you want to be a glammed up, sexy vampire. Have a fun and SAFE Halloween! Optional accessory: Lestat on your arm. ;P OK I had to add this: People commenting about the fangs. I bought the cheapest ones available because I am using them for the tutorial ONLY. If you dress up as a vampire, by all means, spend more on fangs so that you can talk better with them, that they look more realistic, etc. I don't see the point in buying expensive fangs just for the sake of the videos. If it distracts you that much, please feel free to send me a donation via Paypal so that I don't have to spend anymore of my OWN money buying props and makeup and accessories to make these tutorials for you guys. Super Man, Woman, Child & Dog!

Appearing in Action Comics back in 1938, the story of the farm boy named Clark Kent (who just happened to be from another planet) turned Superhero is one that has drawn a loyal following of cartoon enthusiasts and movie goers.

If you have a family full of boys, this theme is the perfect choice. After all, what little kid wouldn't like to grow up to be big and strong like superman? Online Halloween shops have super girl and super dog costumes too so no matter what the gender distribution in your family, you should be able to put this theme together fairly easily.
