Great suggestions here. I'd have to say that reading with a child is one of the most important things you can do for the future.

Yes, they love to go to the library. And I love finding creative ways to get them to read. My youngest son has to have a story before bed. I'll check out some of your recommendations.

Thanks for promoting this special day. As a retired librarian, I know how important literacy is. It isn't just books, as you point out. Reading affects all areas of our lives.

I had no idea that there was a family literacy day. My parents always took time every day to make sure they read to me. It is never a bad idea to do so.

Didn't know there was such a day, but I'm also from the US and currently living in China...but very cool. I'm a teacher and just love the book the Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease...a great read for both parents and teachers. I try to read 5-10 books to my three year old daily and my husband and I both prefer reading to watching tv, I'm hoping my son will grow up to be a reader.

I'd imagine in a developed country like Canada there wouldn't be 42% of people with literacy problems. I wasn't aware of the holiday before but I read almost every day anyways so I keep my mind active and my grammar sharp.

Books and reading play a big part in our lives. From tiny children through adulthood, reading is one of life's greatest pleasures and books are a gateway to an amazing world. I'm delighted to see that Canada has a Family Literacy Day.

My daughters were reading 1st grade readers and Dr. Suess books on their own at the age of 4. Teaching them to read early, I believe, helped them excell in high school, college and they're doing so well in their careers. When they were little, they looked forward to bedtime because that was story and some conversation time. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

Parents just don't read as much as they should to there kids. Family literacy day sounds like good idea.

It is amazing how so many people are still not literate especially in remote areas.

Thanks for discussing the benefits of literacy which is incredibly important. Scary piece of trivia, in California the department of correction predicts the number of beds they will need in prisons the following decade based on the literacy rate of third graders. The statistics say that by third grade a student that does not have proficient reading will more likely be in prison. HELP YOUR CHILD READ! I also wrote a lens on Winnie the Pooh day which could be used as an excuse to read. Great lens.

Had never heard of Family Literacy Day. We do a lot of reading on a daily basis and go to the local library at least once a week. Reading is so important and I am glad that my kids enjoy it. Very nice lens on a great subject.
