Preschool Activities for Family Time

You have worked all day long. Then it's time to pick up the kids and grab some dinner. You are so worn out there's not much of you left for Family Time. Does this sound familiar? For so many families this is the norm.

Even with this as the norm, family time is so important. It helps children feel connected to their parents. Families run more smoothly when everyone feels connected and part of the family.

The great news is...Family Time doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive! Family time is simply spending undivided time and energy on each other. Unfortunately, this does not mean setting down in front of the TV. We tend to disengage while watching TV and are no longer tuned into our family (or children).

Spending just a few moments each day will be an investment you will not regret. Children who feel valued perform better in school and are less likely to become involved in drugs or alcohol. Making your child feel valued is simple...spending time together will help create that bond so desperately needed in the family unit.

These are easy ways to sneak in family time in a fun way, while fostering skills and promoting learning and responsibility. Family time does not have to be an elaborate undertaking. Take a few minutes and sneak in some family time. You'll never regret the time you share with your family.

Try these simple yet easy ideas to sneak in that extra quality time.

Eating together allows you to talk about the day in a relaxed atmosphere. Have fun with dinner time, try an indoor picnic or eat with chopsticks. Children who sit down at a meal with their parents have a higher self esteem. It shows them that they are important and the family is important.

How simple...spending time together folding the laundry. This is an excellent time to teach matching skills by matching socks or outfits. Matching is an important skills for kindergarten readiness as it is a stepping stone to higher level math. Also, let your child help fold towels, washcloths. Show them how then let them try. This is good for following directions and visual-perceptual skills. Encourage them the entire time they are folding (remember...they haven't done this as much as you) it's okay if they are not folded to your exact specifications. Your child will get better and they will have a sense of pride and accomplishment when you put them away just as they folded them.

Don't know what to talk about? Preschoolers are easy. Just talk about their day, what you see out the window, what you are going to do when you get home.

If you are planning on doing something out of the ordinary and you need your child's cooperation, travel time is a great time to get them prepared for what will be expected.

For example, if you need to go somewhere and need them to take a bath...tell them on the way home "When we get home we are going to get a fast bath. Then we are going to put on clean clothes so we can go..." Keep reinforcing this by repeating and asking them to tell you the plan. You'll find the schedule change will not be a big struggle.

This is such a great way to spend some special time together. Reading together will also teach your child that reading is important. It helps develop vocabulary skills and language skills.

Give everyone a basket, go from room to room picking up things that do not belong in that room. Then put everything in your basket where it goes. You could even turn this into a game. Whoever has the most stuff in their basket wins! This is not only a great way to connect as everyone has fun BUT the house gets picked up at the same time.

You never here someone say they wished they could spend more time at work. In fact the opposite is usually true. Most people wish they could spend more time with their families.
