Family Tree Charts

**Make online family tree charts**

One of the best ways to share your genealogy is with family tree charts.

Types of Family Tree Charts

1. Pedigree Chart - This chart shows an individual, the parents, the grandparents, the great-grandparents, etc.  Each individual has a birth date, birth place, marriage date, marriage place, death place, and death date.

2. Descendants Chart - This chart shows an individual, the children, the grandchildren, the great-grandchildren, etc.  Each individual has a birth date, birth place, marriage date, marriage place, death place, and death date.

3. Family Group Sheet - This chart shows the parents and children of a family. Each individual has a birth date, birth place, marriage date, marriage place, death place, and death date.

How to Make Family Tree Charts

1. You can make all of these family tree charts by hand.  Simply print these charts off the Internet and start writing!  Pros: Free, easy and portable.  Cons: Difficult to update and can get sloppy.

2. Download a genealogy program so you can display these family tree charts on your computer.  Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is one of the best genealogy programs and best of all, it's free.  Pros: Free and organized.  Cons: Limited to your own computer.

3. Make online family tree charts by uploading your information with a family tree generator.  Pros: Easy to share, organized, and professional.  Cons: May cost small fee.

This is a great high-level view some of the chart types available and the ways to make them. I work for a company named Progeny Genealogy (http://www.progenygenealogy.com) that makes software to create family trees. One of our programs even works with PAF, which you mentioned above. Although these are the more popular chart styles, there are a number of others available like ancestor charts, fan charts, or hybrids.
