#1 Rummikub - our current Favourite Family Game!
Rummikub
Amazon Price: $12.95 (as of 12/26/2009)![]()
We only discovered this game a few months back and it has quickly become our family favorite. It is challenging and fun for both kids and adults. Sometimes we even play with other adult friends without the kids, or they play without us. The game is played with numbered tiles, each in one of four colors. The object of the game is to combine tiles into runs (consecutive numbers - same color) or sets (all same number) until you have no tiles remaining. The twist is that the game allows you to rearrange and reuse any tiles which have been played as long all tiles in play end up in a run or set at the end of your turn.

#2 Labrynth
Was our #1 favourite family game for years.
The Amaze-ing Labyrinth
Amazon Price: $30.95 (as of 12/26/2009)![]()
Another game we sometimes play at night, after the kids have gone off to sleep. I was not surprised that this game was selected as Parenting Magazine's Toy Hall of Fame Winner of a Parents Choice Gold Seal Award. This is one of the best games we have ever played. It sat on the top of our list for years, only replaced in the past few weeks - which may just be a passing phase. This game involves shifting a maze at the beginning of your turn to allow your piece to get to one of the many treasures you need to collect. The game is different and exciting every time you play. While the game is recommended for ages 8+, there is a simpler version in the directions to allow younger kids to play too. Be warned, it is a game your kids might beat you at!
We Choose Games Which are Fun for the Whole Family
#3, 4 and 5 Rat-a-Tat-Cat, Horseshow, Set
Our Favourite Card Games - in no particular order

Card games are great as they are fun, entertaining and portable. We travel, often having short overnight trips, so small, self contained games are quite useful. These are are top three favorites and all award winners:

#3 Set
Cards contain different combination of four criteria: color (red, green or purple), symbol (diamond, squiggle or oval), shading (solid, striped or open), and number (1, 2 or 3). A "set" is any three cards with all features either the same or different. Directions have lots of example so it is quite easy to understand. When we purchased it we were warned that before long the children would be faster at spotting the sets than we are and it has proved to be true. Recommended for age 6+
#4 Rat-a-Tat-Cat
While we initially purchased this game to add with simple addition, the girls maths skills are well beyond the game, and the game is now selected on its own merit. Each player has four cards, of which they can "peek" at only two. The object is to create a hand with the lowest possible score by exchanging cards from those in the deck. The cards are numbered 0-9, and the game aids with early addition and memory. The cute pictures keep kids interested and help with early numbers as the larger cats have lower numbers so you want cats, the larger rats have higher numbers, so you get rid of rats.
Winner of Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Best Toy Award and the 1996 Mensa Best New Mind Game. Recommended for ages 6+
#5 Horse Show
Another great game by Gamewright, this card game is a bit more complicated than Rat-a-tat-cat, and requires basic reading skills. It's a strategic game based on horse shows, again using points and scoring, so some maths is involved. As a bonus, children learn from the cards about authentic tack and actual show events.
Awarded Dr. Toy's Best Children's Vacation Products (1997) and Parenting Magazine's Best Toy of the Year (also 1997). Recommended for ages 8+
You Can Get These and Other Card Games on ebay
Sometimes the games we are looking for are available on ebay. I always asked the auctioneer to be sure the game has all the cards, and none of them are bent, torn or damaged. So far we have had only good ebay experiences.

Boggle
Amazon Price: (as of 12/26/2009)![]()
This is a game I used to play with my mom (I think I was already an adult). Once our kids were reading chapter books and had a reasonable grasp of spelling, this game quickly became amongst our favourites. It consists of 16 dice with letters, a grid for them to fall into and a timer. In 3-minutes each player finds as many words as possible from the letter arrangement. Each round is different and points are only given for unique words.

#8 Dominoes

Dominoes offer so many games. Our favourite is a game of skill and strategy called Mexican Train. The game is played by building "trains" by matching end numbers out from a central point. We play with double 12 dominoes and a full game will take about 3 hours. We also have a travel set of double 9s and the game is much shorter. Here are several different domino sets, even a double 15, which I had never heard of before building this lens.

Dominoes on eBay
We don't know why anyone would part with their dominoes, but lots of people do! If you are looking for a set, you may be able to find a used one here. Be sure to ask if all of the tiles are in the package. Happy Bidding.

Yahtzee
Amazon Price: $8.99 (as of 12/26/2009)![]()
Another game I played with my parents. Yatzee has been around since 1956. A more complicated maths game, children with lower skills just need a bit of help adding their scores. Players take turns rolling five dice hoping for combinations like Full House, Large Straight and Five of a Kind - that's Yahtzee! The game can be played on line now, but it's just not the same.
#10 Monopoly

I would imagine that most families who play games would have a monopoly game in their cupboard. My classic version was one of the many things lost when we shifted to New Zealand. For mother's day the girls replaced it with the New Zealand version. That's when I first realized that the Monopoly board and pieces have been remade in many themes, while the fun, the rules and the game is the same. I added Jr. Monopoly here, as we played this when the girls were younger. Also quite fun, it can be completed in about 20 minutes.
We are not the only ones who like Monopoly, as it is the most popular, most widely played, and best-selling board game in the world. creative commons photo by evelynishere

- We really like Tri-ominoes. It is somewhat similar to Dominoes, except that the pieces are triangular shaped with three numbers instead of two. It is more challenging, and fun for old and young alike.

- Rummikub is also our favorite! When you have kids ages 6 to 15, you need something the whole family can play and Rummikub fits the bill. We've been playing for just over a year and the kids still love that one. Nice collection of family games!

- We have been playing Rat-a-Tat-Cat for years and love it. As the kids have gotten older they've created variations to make it more challenging. Monopoly is one of those games we all love as children but then as adults...well, it's a little snoozy. But of course, my kids like it! Great topic for a lens.
