Being real when life gets real.

This will get into the depths of our souls. Digging deep for integrity and respect. What has the world made us into? or maybe you did not succumb. Are you keeping it real, or have these hardships taken a toll on you, and the dignity you once had?

When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going

the times

"When the going get's tough, the tough get going". I can remember hearing that phrase over the course of my life, and to me it meant that when things get rough, one must be strong enough to push through the bad times, even if you REALLY feel you want to run as fast as you can in the opposite direction. When I think of my Father's Parents, they exemplified this philosophy. Born in the early 1900's, they weathered the depression, illness and marital ups and downs with grace and dignity. That's not to say they painted a rosy picture of their struggles. I can remember often hearing my grand father refer to my grandmother as an "old battle axe" and I can remember her telling him repeatedly to "quit your belly aching" but when all was said and done, they were a rock solid unit, virtually indestructable and when they had nothing else, they had each other, and NOBODY could take that away from them.

The Next Generation

My parents Generation on the other hand, were the first to really "popularize" divorce. Women were moving out of the kitchen and into the workforce in droves, and it seems that along with that new sense of independence came an insidious counterpart; the art of giving up. Feminism touted that woman could "have it all" and indeed, I honestly believe that we CAN have it all, but in the mad dash to achieve that, commitment got kicked to the curb. I believe that generation of men and women were the first to be encouraged to be selfish. Yes, it's a wonderful to focus on your own dreams and desires, but in doing that, what have we sacrificed? Hard work, Dedication and stability were the sacrificial lambs of this generation. Don't like your job? Does your spouse just not "get it" all the time? Kids drive you crazy? Well, take the easy way out. Quit the job, there is bound to be another one out there. Leave your spouse too...they are a die a dozen, and we all now the next relationship will be SOOO much better (yeah right). Gone was the fighting instinct I can so proudly remember in my grandparents; that was the instinct that saves families, neighborhoods, businesses. It was replaced with the notion that EVERYTHING is replaceable, and that idea has shaped generations since then.
