Family Christmas Picture Tips

What would the holidays be if we weren't taking pictures of everyone who visits, our families and friends, and the great snowman that dad and the kids made on Christmas Eve? We love taking photos at Christmas time. Will you be taking lots of candid shots of your family or go for a professional portrait or something in between?

First, candid shots are lots of fun. You can catch dad in the act of sneaking Christmas cookies (Weren't those supposed to be for Santa?), and the kids happily helping decorate the Christmas tree.

Or mom decorating her best homemade cookies. If you like, you can get all the kids together in front of the tree (family pet optional) for a cute photo that can be framed and put out at holiday time for years to come, or sent in your holiday greeting cards.

Professional portraits are great for the family, too. You can dress in coordinating outfits, whether formal or casual, and create a wonderful family memento of the holidays. This is especially nice in a year when someone new joins the family.

However you decide to do it, you'll want to take plenty of pictures this holiday, to help keep those warm memories for years to come.

How to Have a Heartwarming Family Christmas Eve

It's Christmas Eve and the snow is leaving a gentle coat of white on the lawn. Carols play on the stereo; the tree is lit with a thousand twinkling lights and then - Oh! You've drifted off into dreamland!

It's Christmas Eve and the kids are tearing through the house and you're elbow deep in turkey stuffing. You can still have a wonderful, heartwarming Christmas Eve. Here are some ideas:

If you can, simplify the preparations. Seriously, would you rather be stuffing the turkey or drinking eggnog and singing Jingle Bells? No one will care if the stuffing comes out of a box. Simplify!

Gather the kids and read "Twas The Night Before Christmas". Use your voice to create excitement and mystery.

Sing carols - put on your favorite songs and sing to your heart's content. It will make you laugh and it will bring your family together, creating memories as you go.

Consider letting each person unwrap one small gift.

Put on your pajamas, pass the hot cocoa and watch one of the great Christmas specials on TV as a family.

When it's bedtime, keep the lights low, turn down the music, and turn the TV off. Gently encourage the kids to sleep so they can be refreshed for Christmas day. Shhh.

Family Christmas - How Do You Celebrate?

Every family has it's own ways of celebrating Christmas from the shopping excursions to singing Silent Night before dinner. How does your family celebrate?

Leading up to Christmas, some families make a tradition out of heading to the shopping center early on the morning after Thanksgiving. Some families don't shop at all; rather, they enjoy pooling their resources and giving a gift to charity, and small remembrances of the season to each other.

For some families, the holiday wouldn't be complete without going to see all the decorations in the neighborhood, or participating in the church Christmas pageant. Some light candles for Advent, and some keep a special calendar that the children mark for each day that brings us closer to the holiday.

When it comes to Christmas morning, some families go at gift opening with abandon, and some take turns opening their gifts one at a time.

Christmas dinner for some families might be a full meal with turkey and all the trimmings, and some take a casual approach by fixing a wonderful brunch.

For some the tradition is to tell the story of Christmas on Christmas Eve. No matter how your family celebrates, the most important Christmas tradition to share is to love one another.
