The photo is of the San Antonio Airport. You can see there is a welcome banner for our troops coming home from the Middle East. The gentleman on the left is a volunteer working at the San Antonio Airport to help our visitors with anything they need as they arrive.

Fiesta Week In San Antonio
San Antonio Party
This is Fiesta week in San Antonio. Fiesta is the 11 day San Antonio party that we have each April. Today is April 23, 2009. The whole city is abuzz with bright, colorful decorations, the best foods from all around the world with a huge emphasis on delicious Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. San Antonio knows how to party and how to eat! Fiesta proves it every year.
For 3 nights each Fiesta week, we have NIOSA. NIOSA stands for Night In Old San Antonio. It is held downtown in La Villita and you can buy food from around the world while bands entertain you. La Villita is a village of specialty shops where you can purchase beautiful gifts and jewelry, paintings, one-of-a-kind clothing, plants, candy, cookies, and many other interesting things. During NIOSA, food booths are set up and you can sample foods from many countries. Go hungry and expect to have a great time.
We also have 3 parades during Fiesta. On the first Monday night, we have the Texas Cavaliers River Parade. The second Friday is a city-wide holiday for the afternoon street parade called The Battle Of The Flowers. Then on the final Saturday evening, we have the Fiesta Flambeau, a lit-up street parade. All 3 parades are fabulous and are locally televised.
Plan to come and stay for as many days as you can and help San Antonio celebrate Fiesta!

Sea World San Antonio
Home Of Shamu
When you visit San Antonio, be sure that you visit Sea World San Antonio, the home of Shamu the killer whale. This is my favorite place in San Antonio.
The first time I visited, my 20 year old was 7 months old. Sea World had just been open for about a year. My husband, my baby and I drove to Leakey from El Paso to visit my husband's parents and while we were there, we got to go to Sea World San Antonio!
Back in 1988, it was very nice, but there is a whole lot more to it now. We had a great time that day. More than nine years ago we moved to San Antonio and some years we have bought season tickets.
I love the shows. They add new ones all the time. The best ones are those with animals, like Shamu.
I also love the penguin exhibit. They fascinate me. The aquarium is a wonderful place where I can spend hours watching all of the species swim around. There are several varieties of sharks, stingrays and other fish. So cool. I like it when the diver goes into the tank and talks to the audience while he feeds the sea animals. They do this a few times a day, but you have to time it just right. Expect a crowd.
Another cool place at Sea World San Antonio is the dolphin petting pool. The park sells fish for you to feed to the dolphins which is the only way you are going to pet them. They go only where the fish are so bring extra money to buy fish and have someone ready with a camera to snap the photo of you with the dolphins.
The rides will be loved by your kids. There are several roller coasters. My daughter loves them and they terrified me the last time I went on them with her two years ago. The water slides and water rides are a lot of fun. There is a huge pool that is great fun as well. It is a wave pool. Try it out. There are lockers you can rent to put your stuff in. Bring your bathing suit. A lot of guests where it under shorts and a shirt. At some of the shows and on some of the rides, you will get wet anyway, so why not?

The Alamo San Antonio
Who Knew?
When I was a child, my father was fascinated with Texas. He grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York, (me, too) but he was in Fort Worth while in the Air Force. When he got out, he stayed in Texas for a while and made several visits to San Antonio where he stayed at a downtown hotel called the Blue Bonnet Hotel. It is no longer there. If anyone knows where it was located, I would love to know. (My father passed away long before I ever knew that I would one day live here.)
Anyway, my father loved the Alamo. San Antonio and the River Walk were dear to him.
So back in 1988, when I first visited San Antonio with my husband and baby, we went to see the Alamo. From the movies, I expected it to be much bigger than it really is.
It started out as a church mission, not a war fort. When Americans heard the Mexican troops were coming to take Texas back, they went into the mission, using it as a military fort. For more information on it, you can see the article here.
Make sure you visit The Alamo San Antonio when you come to town. Buy some souvenirs from the gift shops there to support the upkeep of this great Texas monument.

Around San Antonio
I recently wrote a series of pages about towns and cities around San Antonio. These will make great day trips while you are visiting San Antonio. You can read this section right here.
You can go tubing in Leakey, visit Garner State Park, go see the Capitol building in Austin, do some fabulous outlet shopping in San Marcos, eat the best peaches ever in Fredericksburg, see Luckenbach Texas...you know from the song by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson from the 1980's. You can even rent the town to get married in or for some other special event.
All are close enough that you can still come back to San Antonio the same day.

Shopping In San Antonio
Shopping in San Antonio is a fun experience! I have recently started a section on this new website about shopping here. Feel free to look at it here.
We have a lot of malls, strip, and connected. Many are not listed in my section. Shopping can be found all over the city, including a lot of Targets and Wal-Marts if you need something but don't want to spend too much while you are visiting San Antonio.
Our newest mall is called The Shops At La Cantera and it is an open air mall. Just beautiful. You will truly enjoy shopping and eating there.

Driving In San Antonio
Traffic Is Bad!
San Antonio is the biggest city I have ever lived in. Also, the most confusing when driving. There are a lot of freeways and highways all over the place and if you don't know exactly where you are going, you will get lost! I have lived here almost 10 years now and I still have no idea how to get around a lot of the city.
Driving in San Antonio can be made a lot easier if you plot out your route ahead of time, either by old-fashioned street map, by mapquest.com which is a real lifesaver for me, or by the greatest thing ever invented, the GPS! I want one for Christmas or for my birthday coming up in November.
This past summer, my husband and I had some business down in New Orleans and Nashville. We flew to both places and he was intelligent enough to rent cars in both cities with GPS units. He reserved them online ahead of time, just so you know it is best to do that!
Those GPS units are the coolest things and we never got lost. Whoever invented it is the coolest person in the world! I am just so impressed by these things. It made it so easy to get around, that I know it will make it easy here in the most difficult city I have ever lived in.
So, if you are planning to drive to San Antonio, pick up a GPS. You can get a cheap one at Wal-Mart for about $100 and the most expensive they have is about $600 with various models in between. I am hoping my husband reads this lens and gets me one. He will get in from Afghanistan the day before my birthday this year and that is what I want! David, do you hear me?
My husband grew up in San Antonio and never has any problems finding things or driving around. Trouble is, he is never here. He has spent most of the last five years in Iraq and Afghanistan so he has not been here to chauffeur me around...
Anyway, if you have the GPS unit or you are good with a street map, or you can use mapquest, you should be fine. My problem is that I can get lost in my own backyard!
