If you've ever talked to someone who took the time to do this for their family, it takes LOTS of planning! Hopefully, you have someone else who can help you tie all those loose ends together before the big day. And you definitely don't want to forget about a family reunion t shirt so everyone has a souvenir or a memento when they get home!

I have a friend who was happy to write about HER family reunion day and what it all entailed. I hope you enjoy her post.

I remember we started about 6 months before our big family reunion (and we probably should have started sooner). There was a group of us cousins (my mom had 9 brothers and sisters and they all had lots of kids!) that helped plan the event. First thing we had to do was pick a Holiday weekend where most people have at least 3 days off (lots of the family wanted to drive in) to give them more time for traveling and enjoying themselves.

The next big piece of the planning was collecting everyone's phone number, address, or email address. This was a HUGE part of the planning since we had many relatives still living in Canada and not many of us had kept in touch. So nagging all the aunts and uncles for access to their address books was needed. Over 200 relatives were contacted and told that a family reunion was planned for that summer. After all, people needed time to plan their vacation time around work, school, and whatever else they had going on.

Since we had planned on having the event at the family farm, the place and parking were NOT an issue for us, although I realize that for most families this would be a large part of the coordinating. It's almost like putting on a wedding there is so much to do!

Food had to be planned, booking a photographer had be done early on, the scrapbooks made, finding room to accommodate all the visiting relatives and the T-Shirts had to be designed so they could be printed early on!

That part was so much fun! We had a college art major (yep, a friend of the family) design a T-Shirt that became the theme of our reunion for us. We picked pink and gray shirts that everyone was able to purchase in advance and then used the profit of the t shirts to help us cut down on the cost of the food for the big picnic we had planned. Since there were so many that had to travel to attend and some had to pay for lodging at night, we wanted to make it as much a "no cost" event as possible. Family members purchasing the T shirts in advance made it possible for us to use the profits from the T shirts to pay for the food to feed everyone.

It worked out wonderful!

Not only were we all able to wear our shirts at the reunion, but they made great souvenirs afterward commemorating our big family day.
